Cynthia competed with Independence to be selected as the county seat. Dallas was founded in the mid-19th century by pioneers who settled in the fertile Willamette Valley. The city was originally named Cynthian but was later renamed Dallas after George Mifflin Dallas, the 11th Vice President of the United States. Dallas was officially incorporated in 1874, and its rich history is still visible in the well-preserved architecture and heritage sites found throughout the city.
