Its county seat and most populous city is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's second most populous city. Allegheny was the first county in Pennsylvania to be given a Native American name. It was named after the Lenape word for the Allegheny River. The meaning of "Allegheny" is uncertain. It is usually said to mean "fine river". Some historians state that the name may come from a Lenape account of an ancient mythical tribe called "Allegewi", who lived along the river before being taken over by the Lenape.

Lebanon to the east, Upper St. Clair Township to the south, Bridgeville to the southwest, Collier Township and Heidelberg to the west, and Carnegie to the northwest. A short segment of Chartiers Creek separates Scott from Rosslyn Farms to the northwest.

The township was named for General Winfield Scott, prominent in the War of 1812 and the Mexican War of 1846-48, and a Presidential nominee of the Whig Party in 1853. Scott's settlement was an indirect result of an earlier military battle. General John Forbes' expedition versus the French at Fort Duquesne in 1758. Accompanying Forbes on that mission was General William Lea (also spelled Lee), an Englishman, who eventually returned to the area to settle in the vicinity of St. Luke’s Church.
