In the early 1980s, the VF Corporation opened an outlet store in an abandoned factory, whose success prompted other retailers to open stores. In the late 1980s, Boaz was a tourist attraction with 130 outlet stores, attracting five million people per year. Retailers moved away from Boaz due to a dwindling customer base, dropping to 80 stores in the early 1990s, with the Great Recession of the 2000s driving away even more. In 2016, three buildings of the outlet center were demolished.
The city's economic landscape is diverse, with major industries including manufacturing, retail, and agriculture playing pivotal roles in shaping its prosperity. Boaz is strategically positioned, offering residents and visitors easy access to various outdoor recreational activities and a welcoming environment.

The city of Boaz is named for the husband of Ruth, a Biblical character in the Old Testament. Incorporated in 1897, Boaz quickly began to "set a pace for her neighbors that could not be closely followed without some extra exertion on their part," stated the editor of a nearby town's newspaper in 1905. Boaz, Alabama is located atop the Sand Mountain Plateau, which is labeled for its sandy soil. The Boaz economy grew from the soil of Sand Mountain, primarily because it was ideal farmland with a mild climate. Boaz was the nearest shopping center for many communities atop the mountain.
Is Boaz, AL worth visiting?
The Boaz Harvest Festival, established in 1965, is held on the first weekend in October. The city also holds a fireworks display and concert in celebration of the Fourth of July, an antique tractor show in late July, and a Christmas Parade. The Julia Street Memorial United Methodist Church, the Snead Junior College Historic District, the Thomas A. Snellgrove Homestead, and the Edward Fenns Whitman House all are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, Boaz Elementary School, the First Baptist Church and Cemetery, and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South all are listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
