In 2015, plaintiffs represented by the Southern Poverty Law Center sued the City of Alexander and its Chief of Police Willie Robinson in federal court, alleging that they had from 2013 to 2015 operated "a modern-day debtors' prison" that unconstitutionally used its police force to arrest and detain at least 190 poor defendants who were unable to pay Municipal Court-imposed fines and costs. In 2017, the city reached a settlement, in which the city and its insurer agreed to pay $680,000 to persons illegally jailed.

Alexander City has a rich and varied history. Beginning with its Indian heritage and running through frontier roots, natural resources have always been important. That was amplified in 1926 when an Alabama Power project created the area's most recognizable natural asset -- Lake Martin. The Avondale Historic District in Alexander City, Alabama, is a 750-acre (3.0 km2) historic district that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The district includes a textile mill building, formerly the Avondale Mills, which closed in 2006 and is now known as Parkdale Mills. It includes a total of 428 contributing buildings and a contributing site, as well as 79 non-contributing buildings or structures, in an area roughly between Rose Ave. and Scott St., Hillabee St., and 7th St. in Alexander City. It includes two sections that were developed at the same time: the Avondale Mill Village which was built and operated by the Avondale Mill Company, and the adjacent Oak Lawn neighborhood, whose residents also worked for the mill. The mill village includes a textile mill, workers' houses, a superintendent's house, and two churches.
