Today the town covers 85 square miles. The largest community within the town is the village of Liberty, which was incorporated on September 17, 1870.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9,632 people, 3,711 households, and 2,263 families residing in the town. The population density was 121.0 inhabitants per square mile (46.7/km²).
