Chicago is located in northeastern Illinois on the southwestern shores of freshwater Lake Michigan. It is the principal city in the Chicago Metropolitan Area, situated in both the Midwestern United States and the Great Lakes region. The city rests on a continental divide at the site of the Chicago Portage, connecting the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes watersheds. In addition to it lying beside Lake Michigan, two rivers—the Chicago River in downtown and the Calumet River in the industrial far South Side—flow either entirely or partially through the city.
Chicago's history and economy are closely tied to its proximity to Lake Michigan. While the Chicago River historically handled much of the region's waterborne cargo, today's huge lake freighters use the city's Lake Calumet Harbor on the South Side. The lake also provides another positive effect: moderating Chicago's climate, making waterfront neighborhoods slightly warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
When Chicago was founded in 1837, most of the early building was around the mouth of the Chicago River, as can be seen on a map of the city's original 58 blocks. The overall grade of the city's central, built-up areas is relatively consistent with the natural flatness of its overall natural geography, generally exhibiting only slight differentiation otherwise. The average land elevation is 579 ft (176.5 m) above sea level. While measurements vary somewhat, the lowest points are along the lake shore at 578 ft (176.2 m), while the highest point, at 672 ft (205 m), is the morainal ridge of Blue Island in the city's far south side.
Lake Shore Drive runs adjacent to a large portion of Chicago's waterfront. Some of the parks along the waterfront include Lincoln Park, Grant Park, Burnham Park, and Jackson Park. There are 24 public beaches across 26 miles (42 km) of the waterfront. Landfill extends into portions of the lake providing space for Navy Pier, Northerly Island, the Museum Campus, and large portions of the McCormick Place Convention Center. Most of the city's high-rise commercial and residential buildings are close to the waterfront.
An informal name for the entire Chicago metropolitan area is "Chicagoland", which generally means the city and all its suburbs, though different organizations have slightly different definitions.
Health and wellness are paramount in Chicago, with the city offering various amenities and services to support the well-being of its residents. The UChicago Medicine and Northwestern Memorial Hospital stand as cornerstones in providing comprehensive healthcare services to the community. Explore the parks, facilities, and programs the Chicago Park District offers. These spaces provide opportunities for outdoor activities such as walking, jogging, sports, and picnicking. Join local fitness centers and gyms to participate in exercise programs, fitness classes, and strength training. Some popular options include Anytime Fitness, Cheetah Gym and Chicago Athletic Clubs. Discover the walking and biking trails in and around Chicago, such as the Lakefront Trail and Bloomingdale Trail. These trails offer opportunities for outdoor exercise and enjoyment of nature.
Population: 2.664 million (2023). ZIP code: 60629. Area codes: 312, 773, 872. Elevation: 597.18 ft (182.02 m). Area: 234.53 sq mi (607.44 km2).
FAQs
What is Chicago, IL best known for?
Sitting on the banks of beautiful Lake Michigan, Chicago, Illinois, is the third-largest city in the United States, just behind New York City and Los Angeles. Chicago is known for its jaw-dropping architecture, vibrant music scene, amazing food, — including deep-dish pizza — and iconic neighborhoods. One of the most famous things that Chicago is known for is delicious deep-dish pizza. This scrumptious style of pizza has layers of cheese, meat, toppings, and chunky tomato sauce in a deep pan lined with a thick crust made from flour and often cornmeal.
Is Chicago, IL a good or bad place to live?
Chicago is a good place to live. There are plenty of job opportunities, and the housing costs are less than many coastal cities. You also have access to all kinds of cultural activities, the food scene is thriving, and there’s always something to do. The top pros of living in Chicago are the food scene (it’s a foodie heaven), the live music, the sports culture, and a top-notch cultural calendar that’s busy throughout the year.
Why isn't Chicago, IL the capital of Illinois?
One reason is that Chicago was not incorporated until 1837, while Springfield became the current capital of Illinois in 1839. At that time, Chicago was a tiny village and not the massive metropolis we know of today. Springfield is not the first capital of Illinois. Initially, when Illinois first became a state, the city of Kaskaskia was selected to be the capital of Illinois. This city was along the Mississippi River and as a result, it flooded often.
