FAQs:

What is a Dementia Care Specialist?

A dementia care specialist is trained to support individuals with dementia and their families by creating personalized care plans, providing education, and ensuring safety and quality of life. They also guide caregivers through challenges, helping them manage behavioral changes and adapt to the evolving needs of the person with dementia.

What Does a Dementia Care Specialist Do?

A dementia care specialist supports caregivers. Their assistance includes:

1. Care coordination and family-oriented care plans

2. Cognition screening

3. Connecting families to community resources

4. Disease Education

5. Managing caregiver needs and reducing their stress

6. Strategies for managing behavioral issues

What is Dementia Care?

Dementia care is designed to specifically help those living with all conditions that fall under the general term “dementia.” Dementia care includes a range of support services that meet older adults where they are during every stage of dementia. Some dementia services include:

1. Personal care

2. Medication reminders

3. Physical activities

4. Dementia activities

5. Social activities

6. Transportation and errands

7. Light housekeeping

8. Meal prep and nutrition

9. Enabling hobbies and passions

What is Dementia?

Dementia is an Umbrella term that is used for a variety of symptoms that are associated with cognitive impairment. Dementia is more than just memory loss and affects all aspects of cognition including functioning, judgment, attention, perception, reasoning, organization, communication, abstract thinking, orientation of time or place, ability to filter emotional responses, and awareness of socially appropriate norms.

How Common is Dementia?

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 5 million U.S. adults age 65 or older have Alzheimer’s and related dementia. By 2060, the CDC projects that about 14 million people will have dementia, which is about 3.3% of the population. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. and the fifth leading cause of death in Americans age 65 and older.

What are the Causes of Dementia?

Dementia is caused by damage to your brain. Dementia affects your brain’s nerve cells, which destroys your brain’s ability to communicate with its various areas. Dementia can also result from blocked blood flow to your brain, depriving it of needed oxygen and nutrients. Without oxygen and nutrients, brain tissue dies.

Damage to your brain results in different symptoms, depending on the area of your brain affected. Some dementias aren’t reversible and will worsen over time. Other dementias are due to other medical conditions that also affect your brain. Another group of health issues can result in dementia-like symptoms. Many of these conditions are treatable, and the dementia symptoms are reversible.

How Many Types of Dementia are There?

Dementia itself isn't a disease. It's an umbrella term used to describe symptoms that can be caused by many brain conditions. All types of dementia fall into one of three groups:

1. Primary dementia. This means dementia is your main condition.

2. Secondary dementia. If you have this type, doctors believe your dementia is caused by another health condition, like a stroke.

3. Reversible dementia. It's also possible to have short-term dementia-like symptoms due to a health issue, such as a lack of vitamins. Once the cause is treated, your symptoms can improve.

What is the Difference Between Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease, and other brain diseases like Lewy Body Dementia, Vascular Dementia, and Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD) all fall under the umbrella of Dementia. Another way to look at it is everybody that who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease has dementia, but everybody with dementia does not necessarily have Alzheimer’s disease.

Is There a Cure for Dementia?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a cure for the most common types of dementia. Currently, approved medications can, at best, slow the decline. The common treatments or therapies used are cognitive therapy for dementia, which helps improve thinking and problem-solving skills, and dementia rehabilitation, which focuses on maintaining independence and daily functioning. Dementia speech therapy supports individuals experiencing communication difficulties, enhancing their ability to express themselves and comprehend language. Additionally, memory enhancement therapy is designed to strengthen recall and cognitive function through structured exercises. These therapies are often integrated into dementia therapy programs, providing a comprehensive approach to improving quality of life and slowing cognitive decline.

Is Dementia Hereditary?

Most cases of dementia aren’t inherited by children or grandchildren. Most often, dementia is influenced by a combination of factors like aging, genetics, lifestyle behaviors, and environmental factors. So, dementia can be hereditary — but it’s rare. While there may be a strong genetic link for rare and early-onset types of dementia, those cases are minimal compared to the number of other cases where people develop dementia by other means.

What's the Life Expectancy of a Person with Dementia?

There’s no easy way to answer this question. Dementia is an “umbrella” term that covers the many different types of underlying neurodegenerative diseases.

Each type of neurodegenerative disease has its unique pattern and development in each person. Also, each person has a unique health profile. Some people may be relatively healthy and others may have several co-existing health issues. All of these factors play a role in the pace of decline in a person with dementia.

To answer more broadly, Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia. The average lifespan after the earliest symptoms is eight years. However, some people have lived as long as 20 years after an Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis.

How Much Does Dementia Care Cost?

The national median cost for in-home dementia care is $30 per hour. Hourly rates vary by location, and state medians range from $21 to $50 an hour. Hiring a caregiver to assist is one cost of in-home dementia care, but it may be necessary for some families to spend money on medications and home safety modifications. Family caregivers should also consider the physical and emotional impacts of caregiving along with lost wages. Understanding in-home dementia care costs can help families prepare for the future.

Symptoms and Signs of Dementia

Changes in mood and behavior sometimes happen even before memory problems occur. Symptoms get worse over time. Eventually, most people with dementia will need others to help with daily activities.

Early signs and symptoms are:

- forgetting things or recent events

- losing or misplacing things

- getting lost when walking or driving

- being confused, even in familiar places

- losing track of time

- difficulties solving problems or making decisions

- problems following conversations or trouble finding words

- difficulties performing familiar tasks

- misjudging distances to objects visually.

Common changes in mood and behavior include:

- feeling anxious, sad, or angry about memory loss

- personality changes

- inappropriate behavior

- withdrawal from work or social activities

- being less interested in other people’s emotions.

Dementia affects each person in a different way, depending upon the underlying causes, other health conditions and the person’s cognitive functioning before becoming ill.

Types of Dementia

Various neurodegenerative disorders and factors contribute to the development of dementia through a progressive and irreversible loss of neurons and brain functioning. Currently, there is no cure for any type of dementia. Types of dementia include:

1. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common dementia diagnosis among older adults. It is caused by changes in the brain, including abnormal buildups of proteins known as amyloid plaques and tau tangles.

2. Frontotemporal dementia is a rare form of dementia that tends to occur in people younger than 60. It is associated with abnormal amounts or forms of the proteins tau and TDP-43.

3. Lewy body dementia is a form of dementia caused by abnormal deposits of the protein alpha-synuclein, called Lewy bodies.

4. Vascular dementia is a form of dementia caused by conditions that damage blood vessels in the brain or interrupt the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain.

5. Mixed dementia is a combination of two or more types of dementia. For example, through autopsy studies involving older adults who had dementia, researchers have identified that many people had a combination of brain changes associated with different forms of dementia.

How to Prevent Dementia

Although there is no effective treatment or proven prevention for Alzheimer’s,  Neurodegenerative diseases, Chronic cognitive conditions, and related dementias, in general, leading a healthy lifestyle may help address risk factors that have been associated with these diseases.

1. Control high blood pressure. High blood pressure, or hypertension, has harmful effects on the heart, blood vessels, and brain, and increases the risk of stroke and vascular dementia. Treating high blood pressure with medication and healthy lifestyle changes, such as exercising and quitting smoking, may help reduce the risk of dementia.

2. Manage blood sugar. Higher than normal levels of blood sugar, or glucose, can lead to diabetes and may increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, cognitive impairment, and dementia. Making healthy food choices, getting regular exercise, stopping smoking, and checking glucose levels can help manage blood sugar.

3. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese increases the risk for related health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. Being active and choosing healthy foods can help maintain a healthy weight.

4. Eat a healthy diet. Aim for a mix of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and seafood, unsaturated fats such as olive oil, low-fat or nonfat dairy products, and limit other fats and sugars.

5. Keep physically active. Physical activity has many health benefits, such as helping to prevent being overweight and having obesity, heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. Aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week.

6. Stay mentally active. Lots of activities can help keep your mind active, including reading, playing board games, crafting or taking up a new hobby, learning a new skill, working or volunteering, and socializing.

7. Stay connected with family and friends. Connecting with people and engaging in social activities can prevent social isolation and loneliness, which are linked to higher risks for cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.

8. Treat hearing problems. Hearing loss may affect cognition and dementia risk in older adults and can make it more difficult to interact with others. Protect your ears from loud sounds to help prevent hearing loss and use hearing aids if needed.

9. Take care of your mental and physical health. This includes getting your recommended health screenings, managing chronic health issues such as depression or high cholesterol, and regularly checking in with your healthcare provider.

10. Sleep well. Sleeping well is important for both your mind and body. Try to get seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Talk with your doctor if you are not getting enough sleep, sleeping poorly, or think you may have a sleep disorder.

11. Prevent head injury. Take steps to prevent falls and head injury, such as fall-proofing your home and wearing shoes with nonskid soles that fully support your feet. Consider participating in fall prevention programs online or in your area. Also, wear seatbelts and helmets to help protect you from concussions and other brain injuries.

12. Drink less alcohol. Drinking too much alcohol can lead to falls and worsen health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, memory loss, and mood disorders. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), part of the National Institutes of Health, recommends that men should not have more than two drinks a day and women only have one.

13. Stop tobacco use. At any age, stopping smoking can improve your health and lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and lung disease.

How to Find a Dementia Care Specialist Near Me

Providing quality dementia care involves ensuring safety, meeting basic needs, and fostering an environment that supports independence. Selecting the right care provider begins with assessing the individual's current needs, considering factors such as mobility, personal care, supervision requirements, and social engagement.

A. Assessing Care Needs
Care needs to evolve as dementia progresses. Early-stage individuals may live independently, while middle and late-stage individuals typically require increasing levels of supervision and assistance. Key questions to consider include:

1. Safety: Is 24-hour supervision needed?

2. Health: Are there medical or medication needs?

3. Personal Care: Is assistance required for toileting, bathing, or grooming?

4. Social Engagement: Would structured activities or group interactions be beneficial?

B. Finding and Contacting Providers
After identifying care needs, seek referrals from sources such as the Alzheimer's Association, healthcare providers, senior centers, or personal networks. When reaching out to providers, inquire about qualifications, services offered, costs, and availability to narrow down the best options before scheduling in-person interviews.

C. Screening and Selecting a Provider
To ensure quality care, evaluate providers based on:

1. Services Offered: Do they meet the individual's needs?

2. Care Plans: How are they developed and reviewed?

3. Training & Experience: Does staff have dementia care expertise?

4. Background Checks: Are staff screened for safety?

5. Contingency Plans: What happens if a caregiver is unavailable?

6. References & Reviews: Speak with other families about their experiences.

7. On-Site Visits: Observe interactions and the care environment for suitability.

Find Dementia support groups and Alzheimer's support groups that provide essential community and guidance for individuals and caregivers navigating memory-related conditions. Many organizations also offer memory care classes and memory enhancement classes designed to help individuals maintain cognitive function and improve daily living skills. Additionally, dementia workshops provide valuable education on strategies for managing symptoms, enhancing quality of life, and accessing resources for long-term care.

Remember that a thorough selection process ensures that the person with dementia receives compassionate, competent care tailored to their evolving needs.
