The suburb was named for the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, which is located in nearby Hillsboro Beach. The city is a part of the Miami metropolitan area of South Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population of Lighthouse Point was 10,486.

Lighthouse Point is located at 26°16′29″N 80°05′22″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6 km²), of which 2.29 square miles (6 km²) is land and .11 square miles (0 km²) (4.58%) is water.

Lighthouse Point is known for boating as the vast majority of the city is built on canals built during the 1950s to 1960s. This created a large amount of waterfront housing and made boating and fishing popular. Through the Hillsboro Inlet, boats can reach the Bahamas within 40 miles of Bimini or 60 miles to Grand Bahama.

In an area of mangrove swamps and fertile farmland, Miss Juliette Becker built the first home in 1947 on the SE corner of Sample Road and NE 21st Avenue. Four years later, in 1951, the first acreage was acquired for development by R. E Batemen. In 1951 the first home in a new subdivision called Hillsboro Isles was completed. On December 23, 1953, the first baby, Cynthia Ann Wright, was born to "Lighthouse Point" parents. From these beginnings, the future City of Lighthouse Point began to emerge.
