Winton (formerly Merced Colony No. 1, Merced Colony No. 2, and Windfield) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Merced County, California, United States. Winton is located 2.5 miles (4 km) north of Atwater, California. and 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Merced, the county seat. Winton was established along the original Santa Fe Railroad. At one time, passenger trains would stop at this location. As of the 2020 census, the population of Winton was 11,709, up from 10,613 in 2010.
The Winton post office, transferred from Yam, opened in 1912. The name honors J.E. Winton, county surveyor. The community was home to the Winton Wrestling Alliance (WWA), a prominent Backyard Wrestling Federation in the late 1990s to mid 2000s. The region is known for its production of crops like almonds, cotton, and tomatoes. Local farming, along with related agribusinesses, provides employment opportunities to residents.
