Pacific Grove, CA
Pacific Grove is a coastal city in Monterey County, California, in the United States. The population at the 2020 census was 15,090. Pacific Grove is located between Point Pinos and Monterey.
The city is the location of the Point Pinos Lighthouse, the Monarch Grove Sanctuary, and the Asilomar Conference Center. Novelist Robert Louis Stevenson frequented Pacific Grove and wrote of visiting lighthouse keeper Allen Luce in 1879. Marine biologist Ed Ricketts and his friend, author, John Steinbeck resided in Pacific Grove for several years. Later, the area was a filming location for A Summer Place starring Sandra Dee, for Roger Spottiswoode's 1989 film Turner & Hooch, and for the TV series Big Little Lies. In 1974, in Pacific Grove, Gary Kildall demonstrated the first working prototype of the Control Program for Microcomputers. The pioneering microcomputer software company, Digital Research, was located in his house. There are several museums, including the Trotter Museum-Gallery, dedicated to early California paintings from the Monterey Peninsula region and the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. Pacific Grove has numerous Victorian-era houses.
The first people to inhabit Pacific Grove were the Ohlone Rumsen tribe who lived between Big Sur and San Francisco since the 6th century CE. Grinding stones from this tribe still exist in Pacific Grove.
The second group of people to come to Pacific Grove were Chinese immigrants as early as 1853. They established a successful fishing village at Point Alones, an area between Lover's Point and the western edge of Monterey. The Chinese were the first to recognize the potential for commercial fishing in Monterey Bay. Others quickly saw the benefit, however, and eventually pushed the Chinese from their daytime fishing grounds.
