Scott Township, PA

 

Scott Township is a township in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 17,024 at the 2010 census.

Allegheny County is a county in Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,250,578, making it the state's second-most populous county, after Philadelphia County. Its county seat and most populous city is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's second most populous city. The county is part of the Greater Pittsburgh region of the state and is the center of the Pittsburgh media market.

Allegheny was the first county in Pennsylvania to be given a Native American name. It was named after the Lenape word for the Allegheny River. The meaning of "Allegheny" is uncertain. It is usually said to mean "fine river". Some historians state that the name may come from a Lenape account of an ancient mythical tribe called "Allegewi", who lived along the river before being taken over by the Lenape.

Scott Township is located at 40°23′29″N 80°4′46″W (40.391469, -80.079657). According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 4.0 square miles (10 km2), all land.

Scott Township has nine land borders, including the Pittsburgh neighborhood of East Carnegie and Green Tree to the north, the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Banksville to the northeast, Mt. Lebanon to the east, Upper St. Clair Township to the south, Bridgeville to the southwest, Collier Township and Heidelberg to the west, and Carnegie to the northwest. A short segment of Chartiers Creek separates Scott from Rosslyn Farms to the northwest.

What is the history of Scott Township, PA?

The township was named for General Winfield Scott, prominent in the War of 1812 and the Mexican War of 1846-48, and a Presidential nominee of the Whig Party in 1853. Scott's settlement was an indirect result of an earlier military battle. General John Forbes' expedition versus the French at Fort Duquesne in 1758. Accompanying Forbes on that mission was General William Lea (also spelled Lee), an Englishman, who eventually returned to the area to settle in the vicinity of St. Luke’s Church.
