The township's southernmost border meets the city limits of Lancaster and includes the communities of Neffsville, Dillerville, and Landis Valley. Residents of Manheim Township elect a five-member Board of Commissioners. Commissioners are elected to serve a four-year term. The township also elects a tax collector and magisterial district judge who serve a four-year and six-year term respectively.
Historically, Manheim Township was seen as a Republican stronghold but in recent years the suburban township has become more competitive resulting in numerous high-investment races. What is the history of Manheim Township, PA?
Manheim Township was first established as an agricultural area and has retained this stature even today. In the early years of farming, much of the land was cleared of timber, and various crops of wheat, barley, and corn were planted. The soil became poor until only buckwheat could be harvested in abundance. When certain fields began to lose their crop yields, they were deserted and new tracts were cleared and planted. However, improvements in farming practices and later the use of fertilizers helped to replenish the farming areas.
