Isaac Constant, a pioneer who settled here in 1852, named the location Central Point because of its location at a crossroads in the middle of the Rogue Valley. At this point, the main north-south road from the Willamette Valley met the road between Jacksonville and settlements along the Rogue River. In about 1870, the Magruder Brothers opened a store at the crossroads. In 1872, a post office was established here under the name Central Point.

The Bear Creek Greenway, a biking and hiking trail connecting Ashland, Talent, Phoenix, and Medford along Bear Creek, also passes through Central Point.
