Hoosick is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2020 census. It was named from the Hoosic River. The Town of Hoosick is in the northeastern corner of Rensselaer County.
Rensselaer County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 161,130. Its county seat is Troy. The county is named in honor of the family of Kiliaen van Rensselaer, the original Dutch owner of the land in the area.
Rensselaer County is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town of Hoosick was organized in 1788, in Albany County, three years before the creation of Rensselaer County in 1791. The region was formerly the District of Hoosick (1772) and previous to that the Hoosick Patent (1688). The Battle of Bennington of the American Revolution was fought northeast of Hoosick, on a farm owned by John Green, in the community of Walloomsac.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 63.2 square miles (164 km2), of which 63.0 square miles (163 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) (0.21%) is water. The northern town line is the boundary of Washington County, New York, and the eastern town line is the border of Vermont. The Hoosic River is an important waterway in the town.

What is the history of Hoosick, NY?
The beginnings of the Town date back to June 3, 1688, when Governor Thomas Dongan of New York Province granted the Hoosick Patent to Marie Van Rensselaer and her three associates. The Walloomsac (1739) and the Schneider (1761) patents added to the boundaries. Early settlement of the patents progressed slowly because of the continual threats of attacks from the French and the Indians during the French and Indian Wars. The Town's location was on a major Indian highway, the "Great Eastern Trail", which was used by the Algonquins and Iroquois.

The most historical event to occur in the Town was the Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington which was fought on and about a hilltop in Walloomsac. Here, General John Stark, Colonel Seth Warner, and the Green Mountain Boys defeated some of Europe's best regular soldiers. The result of this battle was disastrous to General Burgoyne's campaign and contributed more than any other event to his final surrender at Saratoga.
