I've worked with teens as a teacher in middle school, in high school, a high school librarian, and now as a life coach. The reason for my commitment to teens is simple - I really like them. I earned an MEd. in. Secondary English Education and am a Certified Life Coach for Young People through Youth Coaching Institute (YCI). I also write a monthly column on School Library Journal's Teen Librarian Toolbox blog called RevolTeens about teens who make a difference in the world. At home, I have raised three of my own teens, now 23, 19, and 17. I know that they have always needed an outside unbiased voice from teachers, therapists, or other trusted adult as well as their parents' guidance to feel successful and grounded. One of the reasons that coaching works for teens is that they get to talk to someone who is not their mom. An outside, caring, and compassionate adult who works with them where they are now - with no history or baggage. It is a great honor and privilege to be that adult in a teen's life. My story: I lived the first thirty years of my life, as many of us do, wanting to make my parents proud, wanting friends to like me, and wanting to fit in according to all societal norms. The result: a law degree, a high paying lawyer job, boredom and a feeling of "Meh" about my life. Hello Saturn return.
I was Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride who did not know what kind of eggs I liked (terrible reference, but go with me). I went on a self discover journey. I practiced tuning into my intuition. I learned about subconscious reprogramming, inner child and shadow work, I tried meditation for the first time. I took courses in Chinese energy healing, mediumship, and integrated energy therapy. I studied the Akashic Records, talked to my spirit guides, and maybe sometimes just talked to myself. Then I went deep down the Human Design rabbit hole and fell out the other side.
I still do not have the answers to how the universe works, but I feel a bit better. And I developed so many self discovery tools and felt a calling to share them — with you maybe.
I now offer spiritual guidance counseling and human design readings. Warning: a lot of the spiritual stuff falls into the woo woo, airy fairy camp. Mesquite was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1880, who called it Mesquite Flat. The community was finally established on the third attempt after having been flooded out from the waters of the Virgin River. The name was later shortened to Mesquite, and the city was incorporated 1984. The community was named for the mesquite timber near the original town site. Mesquite, like nearby Bunkerville, had its origins in farming. The Peppermill Mesquite casino, which opened in the 1970s, drove Mesquite's diversified economy. The city incorporated in 1984 and established a master development plan during the early 1990s. In the mid-1990s, more casinos opened. By 2006, Mesquite was one of the fastest-growing small towns in the United States, though the late-2000s recession led to the closure of the Oasis (formerly the Peppermill) casino.
Mesquite occupies the northeast corner of Clark County. The eastern border of the city is the Arizona state line. The city is in the Virgin River valley, occupying the northern side of the river. The city lies adjacent to the Virgin Mountains in the northeastern Mojave Desert near the southern mouth of the Virgin River Gorge.
Interstate 15 passes through the city, leading southwest 80 miles (130 km) to downtown Las Vegas and northeast 39 miles (63 km) to St. George, Utah. Nevada State Route 170 leads south from the center of town, crossing the Virgin River into the unincorporated community of Bunkerville before looping back to I-15 at the western city limits of Mesquite.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Mesquite has a total area of 32.4 square miles (83.8 km2), of which 31.9 square miles (82.6 km2) is land and 0.46 square miles (1.2 km2), or 1.40%, is water.
