FAQs:

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming?

Neuro linguistic programming studies the ways our thoughts affect our behavior. It looks at the ways our brains interpret the signals they receive and how these interpretations affect what we do. It does this through language – the linguistic part of neuro-linguistic programming techniques. By examining how our brains process information, NLP techniques help us to look at our thoughts, feelings and emotions as things that we can control, rather than things that passively happen to us.

What Do the Words Neuro, Linguistic, and Programming Means?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a set of skills that reveal the kind of communication that matters most – on the inside and out. For many, it’s clarifying to offer a definition by showing what we mean by the words neuro, linguistic, and programming. Here you go:

Neuro: Referring to the mind or brain, particularly regarding how states of mind (and body) affect communication and behavior. NLP teaches a structural way of viewing mind and body states, developing mental maps that show how things happen and how to change course.

Linguistic: Meaning that our mind and body states are revealed in our language and non-verbal communication. Language is the tool we use to gain access to the inner workings of the mind. Neuro-linguistic programming language patterns teach us how to access unconscious information that would remain vague and unknowable otherwise.

Programming: This refers to the capacity to change our mind and body states. You’ve heard the term living on autopilot, right? To someone trained, this would mean that you are living according to your programming, which consists of habitual thoughts, feelings, reactions, beliefs, and traditions.

How Does NLP Work?

Neuro-linguistic programming is intended to help clients understand their own minds and how they come to think and behave the way they do. With the aid of NLP techniques, clients can learn to manage their moods and emotions and "reprogram" the way they process information. At the same time, NLP is designed to help clients see why they have been successful in the past and determine how they can most easily and efficiently repeat that success in other areas of their lives. NLP therapists believe that their clients have the answers to their problems within themselves; it is simply a matter of helping them draw out those answers.

Therapists who practice NLP often start by building a rapport with their client, mirroring the client’s verbal and nonverbal behavior to create empathy and connection. They will gather information about the client’s objectives and identify problem areas to work on. Along the way, they may correct any language that leads to negative thinking and faulty communication. NLP-based therapy will conclude with a plan for how the client can continue to integrate the positive behavioral changes into their daily life.

NLP therapy can be short-term or long-term, depending on the individual and the extent of the problem.

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming Used For?

Neuro-linguistic programming has been applied to achieve personal development or work-related goals, including increasing productivity and moving forward in one’s career.

It has also been used in the treatment of mental health issues such as:

- Anxiety

- Depression

- Fears and phobias

- Poor self-esteem

- Weight management

- Substance misuse

- Stress

- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Most studies addressing the effectiveness of NLP in treating these issues have been small in scale and have had mixed results.

Is Neuro Linguistic Programming Real?

Lack of empirical evidence and anecdotal support has become the cause of NLP sometimes being branded a pseudoscience. However, more and more peer reviews have recently shown that NLP techniques help manage self-esteem and work-related stress. Moreover, a 2021 study showed that NLP techniques enabled 180 nurses to improve their work quality and be more satisfied with their jobs.

The growing recent evidence and outstanding personal and professional results from NLP students show that this approach works. Yes, there needs to be robust research to remove the stigma created by poor initial studies; however, more of NLP’s criticism stems from the fact that there needs to be more credible research, not that the approach does not work.

What is the Difference Between Neuroplasticity and NLP?

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change and adapt. In this sense, neural pathways can still develop and disconnect throughout our lives. Your actions and experiences influence these brain changes, especially the learning of something new. The practice of neurolinguistic programming can potentially lead to new neural connections as you learn and implement new habits and skills. However, this is theoretically true for any new thing you learn in life, not a quality of NLP per se.

Is Neuro-Linguistic Programming Dangerous?

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a controversial self-help and psychotherapy technique that has been accused of being a dangerous cult. Supporters of NLP claim that it can be used to treat a variety of psychological conditions, but there is little scientific evidence to support these claims. Critics say that NLP is a pseudoscience that uses dangerous and unethical methods, such as hypnosis and manipulation, to exploit vulnerable people. They also claim that NLP can cause serious psychological harm, including anxiety, depression, and even psychosis. So, is neuro-linguistic programming dangerous? There is no simple answer, as there is little scientific research on the risks and benefits of NLP. However, if you are considering using NLP, it is important to be aware of the potential risks and to consult with a qualified mental health professional first. There are only a few techniques available inNLP that are not suitable for every clinical situation, or that significantly change the situation. They can make someone feel different in the moment, but they do not change the underlying causes of the situation.

How Long Does it Take for NLP to Work?

Well, the effects of NLP will not be instant. Like all talking therapies, it will take time for you to begin to notice the impact that NLP is having on your life. However, you will generally be able to notice the effect of NLP quicker than other styles of talking therapy. Most people who have completed NLP have said that it has taken between 2–3 sessions for them to notice the impact of NLP on their lives. For most standard cases of NLP, you will start to notice the effect of it after around 3 sessions. For more complex cases, then you will typically need to complete more NLP sessions in order to feel the benefits of this talking therapy.

Is Neuro Linguistic Programming Effective?

By all accounts, NLP is very effective. While this therapy is based on pseudoscience, it has proven effective in a lot of cases, and it has also been used to treat a variety of different conditions.  Not only has NLP been used by people to alleviate the symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression, but it has also been used to aid physical symptoms, as well as mental symptoms.

Lots of people have used NLP to target physical symptoms, such as pain, allergies, and vision problems, and it has proven super effective. NLP is designed to target the brain, and many people report that it has lots of positive effects. But, with all therapies, what you get out of NLP will really depend on the amount of time and effort you are willing to put into this therapy, and how well you apply yourself to it.

What is an NLP Practitioner?

An NLP Practitioner is a highly resourceful and professional coach who uses the NLP technique to help others. The technique entails using the brain deliberately (in terms of procedures and interventions) to achieve the desired results.

What Does an NLP Practitioner Do?

NLP practitioners are trained to recognise these subtle, unconscious clues so that they can understand how their client is feeling. A practitioner can identify the self-imposed restrictions the clients have put on themselves by unveiling the client’s mental map and working with them to move forward.

Who Developed Neuro Linguistic Programming?

NLP was founded in the 1970s at the University of California, Santa Cruz, by Richard Bandler, a mathematician and information scientist, and John Grinder, a linguist. They came together to release a book called The Structure of Magic I: A Book about Language and Therapy. In this book, they identified patterns based on the modeling of renowned therapists Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir, and a well-known psychiatrist Milton Erickson, which gave birth to the meta-model and Milton model, respectively.

Other notable techniques included in the book came from Gregory Bateson’s work on cybernetics and Naom Chomsky’s work on linguistics. All these practices combine in NLP to provide identification of language patterns describing how each individual perceives their reality and to change them for better outcomes.

The Four Pillars of the Neuro Linguistic Programming

Rapport

NLP provides an important gift to build relationships with other people. Rapport can be described as connecting quickly with others. Creating rapport creates trust from others. Rapport can be built quickly through understanding modality preferences, eye accessing cues and predicates.

Sensory Awareness

Sometimes when you walk into someone’s home, you notice that the colors, smells, and sounds are subtly quite different from yours. Neuro linguistic programming enables you to notice that your world is much richer when you deliberately pay attention to your senses wholly.

Outcome Thinking

An outcome is your goal for doing something. Outcome connects to thinking about what you want, as opposed to getting stuck in a negative mode of thinking. The principles of outcome approach may help to make the best decisions and choices.

Behavioral Flexibility

Behavioral flexibility means being able to do something differently if the way you’re currently doing it isn’t working. Being flexible is a key aspect of practicing NLP. Learning NLP helps you to find fresh perspectives and to build these habits into your repertoire.

Top 10 NLP Techniques

NLP techniques are practical, and there is an infinite number. Here are the 10 common NLP techniques that NLP practitioners use.

1. Dissociation

NLP techniques of disassociation can help you get rid of bad feelings or experiences. For it, identify the emotion that you want to get rid of. It can include any fear, rage, nervousness, or discomfort in any situation. Now, imagine you can come out of your body and look back at yourself having this emotion or entire circumstance. This will help you to disassociate yourself from any negative feelings.

2. Reframing

Reframing is one of the most remarkable NLP techniques that will take any negative situation. Reframing is about empowering you by changing the mind map into something positive. For example, if you feel nervous speaking in public, you can reframe this situation as an exciting growth challenge. Let’s say your relationship ends. It can be a disturbing situation for you. But you can reframe it into a positive. For example, you have the freedom to do anything you want to do. You’re open to another relationship. You learned many lessons from this relationship. These examples are all about reframing a negative situation to a positive one by clearing your head & changing the meaning of experience.

3. Anchoring yourself

Anchoring yourself helps you associate any positive sensory experience with a particular emotional state. This NLP technique can be used anytime to change your mood. For example, when you choose positive emotion and intentionally connect it to any simple gesture, you can trigger this sensory experience anytime whenever you’re feeling low. Your feelings will change quickly, and you can feel that emotion.

4. Priming

One of the common NLP techniques, Priming, is more manipulative. Priming is a technique to adjust your thoughts. Moreover, it helps us to make faster decisions. For example, we use phrases like this in coaching the clients. I know you’re changing, and it is good. So, in this way, we’re priming the client to change.

5. Bad memories

This NLP technique is dedicated to helping people to remove negative thoughts and feelings associated with bad memories. It can be any experience or any trauma.

6. Mental rehearsal

Mental rehearsal is the unique NLP technique that is based on visualization. This technique is about creating imaginary training of yourself performing an action successfully. In addition, it is beneficial to improve confidence and make you believe in yourself & your abilities.

7. Belief changes

The power of belief is highly classic. This NLP technique examines your beliefs. Any thought or limiting belief that lets you down can be deconstructed by identifying and overcoming them. If you believe that you’re not good enough to do this, you probably can not do this. If you think you can do something, you can surely do it. Once you change this belief, you’ll start taking more significant risks to achieve more meaningful goals.

8. Mental maps

For many people, speaking in front of a large audience fills them with fear & anxiety. So, the best way to overcome this fear is to look at yourself from a different perspective. For example, by looking at yourself from the eyes of the observer. This NLP technique is about looking at the situation from a different view. When we see the situation from a different scenario, we get to know what the situation really is. It helps you mentally prepare for the situation that makes you feel apprehensive.

9. Mirroring

Mirroring is an NLP technique used to build rapport with anyone by leveraging body language during the conversation. According to research, your tone of voice and body language communicates 93% of your messages more than your words. When talking with someone, mirror your body language according to theirs. If they’re calm and relaxed, you will do the same. It’ll decrease the chance of friction during the discussion, and other people will find you trustworthy. Hence, it is a great technique to get along with anyone.

10. NLP swish

NLP Swish is the advanced NLP technique that is about changing thoughts & behaviour patterns to come to the desired outcome rather than the undesired outcome. Hence, if you link any emotion to an unwanted experience, NLP swish is a technique to disrupt that link. Also, it trains your brain to strengthen positives and weaken negatives.

The Benefits of Neuro Linguistic Programming

Further proof that NLP is indeed real is that it has numerous advantages to those who opt for certification from credible sources and pursue the practice ethically. NLP is a mental skill, and once you learn the language of your mind, you can achieve clarity of what you want and how you can get it. The answers to success are within you; NLP techniques help you piece them together.

1. Clarity with Goals and Vision

Perhaps the biggest hindrance to success is that we often do not believe in or understand our purpose. Through NLP, we study subconscious daily behavior patterns that determine our outlook on life.  When you study NLP, you can learn what your goal in life is and how to achieve it. This clarity comes with altering your worldview to mimic successful individuals who have achieved greatness. Moreover, since NLP works on the unconscious mind, it changes how we communicate within ourselves, making it much more effective due to its rapid change techniques. So, you gain clarity on what you want in life and the vision of how to get it.

2. Improved Communication With Others

As the name suggests, Neuro-Linguistic Programming is all about understanding how you communicate within and with others. Thus, this approach is tailored to improve your communication skills. NLP uses techniques like mirroring and establishing rapport to gain others’ trust quickly. People will likely communicate with you and listen to you more if they believe you understand them. Furthermore, improved communication skills also help you overcome social anxiety by enabling you to express yourself better through techniques such as visualizing a successful conversation beforehand to gain confidence. NLP allows you to become a better communicator since it teaches you how to use verbal and non-verbal cues to assess a listener’s response and act accordingly.

3. Overcoming Limiting Beliefs

Many times, we are the only thing in our way. Your mindset plays a vital role in assessing different situations. We often limit our capabilities because we limit our growth. By studying NLP, you can identify these self-sabotaging patterns and alter them to succeed in your personal and professional life. One of the main techniques of NLP is modeling; it basically teaches that success can be replicated if we follow the behavioral patterns of successful people. You can make the required changes by analyzing how you view the world to get the ideal outcome. For example, a pessimist and an optimist will view the same thing very differently; the former will see a risk, and the latter will view an opportunity.

4. Developing Strategies for Problem Solving

The first step to problem-solving is finding the heart of the problem to reach a beneficial solution. NLP does just that by helping you understand individual world perception and how experiences shape reality and behaviors. Once you tap into the conscious and unconscious mind, developing strategies to tackle all kinds of problems becomes easy. After establishing the problem, NLP’s foundational pillars, like focusing on the outcome and changing your habits to achieve what you desire, can help you solve the issues quickly. Moreover, these strategies work efficiently because they are based on your brain language: sensory awareness or how you experience the world.

5. Improved Self-Confidence

Various NLP techniques help improve self-confidence. From modeling confident people to tapping into a moment where you feel most brazenly yourself, you can use NLP tools to negate behaviors that make you self-conscious or restrict your ability to behave like your true self.  Moreover, with NLP techniques like anchoring, you can attain this feeling of complete confidence any time you like. With a touch (or smell or sound), you can tap into your most confident self any time you have negative thoughts or are in a difficult position.

The Disadvantages of NLP

1. Nobody really knows exactly what NLP is. One puts up a chique pseudo-scientific story about nervous systems and the brain, another emphasizes that it is for more effective communication and another talks about ‘being in your power’. All very vague. That’s because NLP is no longer a protected term and has ended up in the public domain.

2. Many people confuse training with coaching. They participate in an NLP training and then want to solve all kinds of personal problems in that training. However, a training is to learn skills. Let’s make it clear once and for all: if you want to solve your own themes and achieve your own goals, you should take 1-on-1 coaching. If you want to develop your skills, you have to take an education and do the homework that goes with it.

3. Many people make a complex equivalence between NLP and coaching, while coaching is just one of the many applications of NLP. They follow an NLP training and almost automatically become a coach, while that is not necessarily something they had the talent or experience for.

4. There are many different NLP techniques, so that your learning process never seems to end.

5. There is a chance of commercial sectarianism  among the participants. In other words, keep coming back for seminars. This is more likely than if you were to follow a normal course in behavioral or communication styles. However, that is entirely your own fault. NLP companies – just like any other company – simply use newsletters to sell you further training.

6. Also located meta go about NLP lurking. In other words, talk mainly about NLP instead of mainly applying NLP. NLP is really meant as a tool to be applied continuously, so that you help yourself and others in your life, goals and social interactions. It is therefore the intention that you apply NLP without saying that you are applying NLP. Many newbie NLP students fall prey to this tendency, even though the intention is never to say, “Besides, I just used NLP.”

7. Like all spiritual disciplines, it cannot be followed within the framework of an MBO, HBO or WO study. So you will not receive bachelor’s credits: it is an investment in yourself.

What to Expect from Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Based on their sensory experiences, people develop their own preferred representational system (PRS) or unique way of viewing the world. Therapists may employ NLP techniques to identify their client’s specific PRS and adjust their communication style and therapeutic goals accordingly.

Some common NLP techniques include but are not limited to:

Anchoring: Associating an external or internal trigger with a healthier response until it becomes automatic

Belief changing: Replacing negative thoughts or beliefs that prevent the client from achieving their desires

Reframing: Putting a situation in a different context to elicit an adaptive reaction instead of following the same maladaptive behavioral patterns

Visualization: Forming a mental image of something the client wants

Visual-kinesthetic dissociation: Guiding the client in reliving trauma by evoking an imaginative out-of-body experience

What Happens in an NLP Session

While the methods used by professionals will differ, a standard NLP coaching session will follow the same, basic pattern. Initially, the practitioner will ask what you want to change and the problems you want to overcome. They will pay close attention to what you’re saying and how you say it, tailoring the session to your responses.

The NLP practitioner will then work through a range of exercises with you in order to piece together your “life map”. They will begin to introduce new thought processes in order to help you widen your boundaries.

It is common for the practitioner to give you exercises to practice at home. This will help you get accustomed to the techniques learnt in the NLP coaching session. While the main neurological changes will have occurred during the session, they may take time to settle in. It is normal for the changes to progress over time, as you get back into your daily routine.

They may ask you to record how you felt before, during and after sessions. This is so you and the NLP practitioner can look back on the results. You will also make note of any changes you have noticed since starting the sessions and record any at-home exercises you have completed. When you are ready, both you and the practitioner will decide on the next stage of your life and what change to begin.

It is thought that NLP is becoming a popular technique because it focuses on the future. It works to explore future possibilities and solutions, rather than encouraging you to dig up past memories or experiences. NLP coaching is about adding opportunities and widening perceptions, rather than dwelling on the negatives.
