Lemay was named after Francois Lemai, who operated a ferry boat across the Meramec River in the early nineteenth century. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.5 square miles (12 km2), of which 4.3 square miles (11 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2), or 4.19%, is water.
