I've worked with teens as a teacher in middle school, in high school, a high school librarian, and now as a life coach. The reason for my commitment to teens is simple - I really like them. Lucerne is a former settlement within the township that had its own post office from May 10, 1837, until July 5, 1853. Mallett's Creek is a former settlement within the township. It was named after the nearby stream Malletts Creek, and it was given a post office named Mallett's on June 4, 1834. The post office closed on January 23, 1840. Nebraska was a community settled in 1878 about 6.0 miles (9.7 km) east of Saline. Pittsfield is a former settlement within the township. George Noyes made the first land purchase in the area as early as 1824. The county's first school, the McCracken School, was built here in 1825. The settlement was formally named Pitt in 1831 and was named in honor of former English prime minister William Pitt. A post office named Pitt opened on January 21, 1835, but closed on September 14, 1836. The community was renamed Pittsfield in 1840. In 1878, a railway line along the Toledo & Ann Arbor Railroad was constructed through the area. The post office was reestablished under the name Pittsfield from September 1879 until it closed on December 31, 1907.
When Ann Arbor Township was organized in 1827 it included what is now Pittsfield Township in its boundaries. The township was organized as the Township of Pitt in 1834. The name had been suggested by Ezra Carpenter. The current name was adopted in 1839. It became a charter township in 1972. In 2006 the Ann Arbor District Library opened its Pittsfield branch.
