I've worked with teens as a teacher in middle school, in high school, a high school librarian, and now as a life coach. The reason for my commitment to teens is simple - I really like them. I earned an MEd. in. Secondary English Education and am a Certified Life Coach for Young People through Youth Coaching Institute (YCI). I also write a monthly column on School Library Journal's Teen Librarian Toolbox blog called RevolTeens about teens who make a difference in the world. At home, I have raised three of my own teens, now 23, 19, and 17. I know that they have always needed an outside unbiased voice from teachers, therapists, or other trusted adult as well as their parents' guidance to feel successful and grounded. One of the reasons that coaching works for teens is that they get to talk to someone who is not their mom. My story: I lived the first thirty years of my life, as many of us do, wanting to make my parents proud, wanting friends to like me, and wanting to fit in according to all societal norms. The result: a law degree, a high paying lawyer job, boredom and a feeling of "Meh" about my life. Hello Saturn return.
I was Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride who did not know what kind of eggs I liked (terrible reference, but go with me). I went on a self discover journey. I practiced tuning into my intuition. I learned about subconscious reprogramming, inner child and shadow work, I tried meditation for the first time. I took courses in Chinese energy healing, mediumship, and integrated energy therapy. I studied the Akashic Records, talked to my spirit guides, and maybe sometimes just talked to myself. Then I went deep down the Human Design rabbit hole and fell out the other side.
I still do not have the answers to how the universe works, but I feel a bit better. And I developed so many self discovery tools and felt a calling to share them — with you maybe.
I now offer spiritual guidance counseling and human design readings. Warning: a lot of the spiritual stuff falls into the woo woo, airy fairy camp. Before European settlers arrived, this area was home to the Potawatomi and Ottawa people for centuries. The Grand River was used as a trade route into the interior of Michigan. Macatawa is a small unincorporated community near Lake Michigan on Lake Macatawa that once was home to resorts catering to visitors from Chicago. Nearly all of these resorts were destroyed in several fires. It is now home to cottages only. The community is on the boundary between Laketown Township in Allegan County and Park Township in Ottawa County, however, it is on the south side of Lake Macatawa separated from most of Park Township at 42°46′11″N 86°12′22″W. Waukazoo Woods is a neighborhood on the north shore of Lake Macatawa. Present-day Waukazoo Woods was formerly an Ottawa Indian village, which was led by Chief Waukazoo. In the early 1900s, Wauakazoo, a popular summer destination for tourists, was home to the Waukazoo Inn, a hotel. The Waukazoo Inn was demolished in 1960, being replaced by private homes.
