Shiawassee County is included in the Lansing-East Lansing, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1822, the Michigan Territorial legislature defined a new county, Shiawassee (named for the river), taken from portions of existing Oakland and St. Clair counties. The Village of Byron was incorporated in 1873. The Toledo, Ann Arbor & Northern Michigan Railway was built through Byron following the pledge of a $15,001 bonus and the right of way, in 1885.
