Streamwood is one of the three communities that make up the so-called "Tri Village" area, along with Bartlett and Hanover Park. Streamwood was first incorporated as a village on February 9, 1957.

The racial makeup of the village was 46.61% White, 5.93% African American, 1.70% Native American, 16.03% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 16.31% from other races, and 13.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.77% of the population.
