Pelham is a city in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. It was incorporated in July 1964 and is a suburb located in the Birmingham metropolitan area, Alabama which was home to over 1.1 million residents as of the 2020 census. It was named for Confederate Civil War officer John Pelham.

Before 2014 some portions of Pelham bordering Chelsea attended public schools in Chelsea; residents there were concerned about the separation of Pelham due to the distance of schools in Pelham from their areas.

What is the history of Pelham, AL?

Incorporated in 1964, Pelham was originally a pre-Civil War settlement called Shelbyville. Sometime after the Civil War the settlement of Shelbyville was renamed Pelham in honor of Major John Pelham. Major Pelham, a Civil War hero, fought in more than 60 battles. His greatest battle was at Fredericksburg where he confused a federal army of 120,000 men with his brilliant one-gun barrage from their flank. His contribution to the Confederate victory that day was a major one and General Robert E Lee cited the part played by "the gallant Pelham" in his official report.
