Homewood is a city in southeastern Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is a suburb of Birmingham, located on the other side of Red Mountain due south of the city center.

The first settlers of the area which would eventually become Homewood arrived in the early 1800s. The area's population, however, did not grow significantly until Birmingham suffered a major cholera epidemic in 1873 (See Timeline of Birmingham, Alabama).

Edgewood saw the greatest amount of development. The community contained an Electric Railway leading to downtown Birmingham by 1911 and a man-made lake by 1915. The lake was created by the construction of a dam along Shades Creek near Columbiana Road. Two parallel roads were graded on either side of the lake to create a race track around the lake, however these plans never came to fruition. The roads eventually became Lakeshore Drive and South Lakeshore Drive.

On December 29, 1926, a local attorney named Charles Rice started a movement to merge several of the communities surrounding Birmingham. In September of the same year, Rosedale, Edgewood, and Grove Park voted to incorporate under the name Homewood. The city of Hollywood, Alabama was annexed into Homewood in 1929. In 1955, Oak Grove was also annexed into Homewood.

SoHo Square is a 4-story mixed-use redevelopment of a prominent block in the center of Homewood's downtown area, developed by Cyprus Partners and anchored by Homewood City Hall. The building was designed by Cohen Carnaggio Reynolds and built for $55 million. The name of the project originally referred to Homewood's status as the first suburb south of Birmingham, with a nod to the upscale neighborhood in London, and the arts district in New York City. In later marketing, the name was said to stand for "So Homewood".

18th Street South (originally Park Avenue) in Homewood is a southern extension of Birmingham's 18th Street South. The approximately 0.8-mile, north-south road runs from where the Homewood and Birmingham city limits meet at Valley Avenue through the Homewood Central Business District to Oxmoor Road. The road was renamed from Park Avenue during the 1940s when Homewood renamed several streets to continue Birmingham's street numbering system.
