You’re probably familiar with this sequence of events: you read a fantastic article or watch an inspiring video about something, decide to pursue it diligently, and then abandon it a few weeks later. Whether you’re trying to go to the gym, learn guitar, or start meditating, inspiration will only take you so far. After the initial rush wears off, most people drift back to their normal routines.

If you’ve been reading or hearing about meditation and have been meaning to start for a while, you might relate to this. You know meditation is good for you, but you just can’t seem to get into it and stay consistent. The key is to make it a habit so you can continue to enjoy its benefits. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re struggling to stick with your meditation practice.

1st tip is to join a meditation community

Human beings are social creatures. If you feel isolated and alone, you may be less likely to stick with habits that benefit you. There are many online meditation communities where you can share your progress and connect with practitioners from around the world. For example, apps such as Coach.me can offer daily motivation and accountability from people who are also trying to improve their lives through meditation. You can also attend meditation seminars and retreats if you want to meet like-minded people in person.

2nd tip is to find a mentor

Finding the right mentor can significantly improve your meditation journey. Someone who has been in your position can guide you through difficult periods and help you stay committed to your practice.

3rd tip is to set right expectations

Some days, meditation will leave you feeling calm, happy, and refreshed. On other days, you may find it difficult to concentrate, or you may feel nothing at all. That’s perfectly normal. Don’t expect every session to feel profound or transformative. What matters most is that you show up and stay present.

4th tip is to use guided meditations

It can be challenging to sit quietly for 10 to 30 minutes and focus on your breath, especially if you’re new to meditation. Guided meditations can help by providing audio support throughout your session. There are many free guided meditations available online from well-known teachers such as Tara Brach and Sam Harris.

5th tip is not to use special tools required

Unlike a physical workout routine, meditation doesn’t require extra equipment. You don’t need special skills, a mat, or even a pair of headphones. If you can breathe, you can meditate.

Meditation isn’t an instant fix for all of your problems. It can be a powerful practice, but it requires patience and consistency. If you show up every day, let go of expectations, and stay present, you can experience the benefits over time.
