In 1808, Greensboro was planned around a central courthouse square to succeed Guilford Court House as the county seat. Interstates 40, 73, and 85 intersect at the city. Greensboro is 29 miles (47 km) east of Winston-Salem, 54 miles (87 km) west of Durham, 77 miles (124 km) northwest of Raleigh, 90 miles (140 km) northeast of Charlotte, and 201 miles (323 km) southwest of Richmond, Virginia.
