Texas, MI
Texas Charter Township, officially named the Charter Township of Texas, is a charter township of Kalamazoo County, in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the township population was 17,691, up from 14,697 at the 2010 census. It encompasses the entire portion of the survey township T3S R12W. The Texas Township Campus of Kalamazoo Valley Community College is located on the southern side of West O Avenue, just east of 8th Street South.
Kalamazoo County is located in Michigan, in the U.S. As of 2020, the population was 261,670. The county seat is Kalamazoo. Kalamazoo County is included in the Kalamazoo–Portage, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Kalamazoo County was organized in 1830, although its set-off date has yet to be determined. The village of Kalamazoo (then known as Bronson) was made the county seat in 1831.
The name purportedly means "the mirage or reflecting river" and the original Indian name was "Kikalamazoo". See, Etymology of Kalamazoo for details on the origin of the name. See also the list of Michigan county name etymologies. Kalamazoo County does not have a county flag.
The township is in western Kalamazoo County, bordered to the east by the city of Portage and to the west by the village of Mattawan in Van Buren County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.3 square miles (94.0 km2), of which 34.4 square miles (89.1 km2) are land and 1.9 square miles (5.0 km2), or 5.28%, is water. Interstate 94 crosses the northern part of the township, leading east to Kalamazoo and west to Benton Harbor. US 131 is a north-south highway running just east of the township boundary in Portage. Texas Township wholly contains the Al Sabo Preserve, which straddles Portage Creek through southwestern Kalamazoo County.
