Glastonbury, CT

Glastonbury is a town in the Capitol Planning Region, Connecticut, United States, formally founded in 1693 and first settled in 1636. It was named after Glastonbury in Somerset, England. Glastonbury is on the banks of the Connecticut River, 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Hartford. The town center is defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as a census-designated place (CDP). The population was 35,159 at the 2020 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has an area of 52.2 square miles (135.2 km²), of which 51.3 square miles (132.8 km²) is land and 0.93 square miles (2.4 km²), or 1.76%, is water. The Glastonbury Center CDP has an area of 4.9 square miles (12.7 km²), of which 3.30% is water.

The town begins on the banks of the Connecticut River and extends up into foothills, many of which provide a view of Hartford's skyline. Some major developments in the town are built entirely on relatively steep hills, such as Minnechaug Mountain, the major residential area developed from the 1970s until the late 1990s.

Part of Glastonbury resides in an area called Kongscut Mountain, locally called Rattlesnake Mountain, because it has a small population of timber rattlesnakes. Since that area is sparsely developed and mostly in a state forest, the snakes pose little threat.

The town has a small private lake, Diamond Lake, surrounded by growing subdivisions of large homes. Access to the lake is limited to members of the Diamond Lake Property Owners Association.

Glastonbury has one of the largest state forests, Meshomasic State Forest, a popular area for hiking, fishing, and hunting. Glastonbury borders the town and cities of East Hartford, Wethersfield, Rocky Hill, Cromwell, Portland, East Hampton, Marlborough, Hebron, Bolton, and Manchester.

The town center experiences a humid continental climate (Dfa). However, the rural parts of the town, at an elevation of 800 feet near Bolton and Hebron, experience a colder climate that straddles the (Dfa) and (Dfb) lines.

FAQs

Does Glastonbury, CT have a downtown?

First founded in 1693, Glastonbury’s rich history is on full display in the Main Street Historic District. At practically any given point along Main Street, at least one building on the National Register of Historic Places is within sight– partly due to the town’s sprawling past and partly because of its densely clustered town center. “Everything around Main Street is super walkable,” says Kate D’Addabbo, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who has over 20 years of experience selling homes in the greater Hartford area.

Why is Glastonbury, CT so popular?

Regarded as a major event in British culture, the festival is inspired by the ethos of the hippie, the counterculture of the 1960s, and the free festival movement. Vestiges of these traditions are retained in the Green Fields area, which includes sections known as the Green Futures, the Stone Circle, and Healing Field. Michael Eavis hosted the first festival, then called Pilton Festival, after seeing an open-air Led Zeppelin concert in 1970 at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music.

What is the crime rate in Glastonbury, CT?

The crime rate in Glastonbury is considerably higher than the national average across all communities in America from the largest to the smallest, although at 14 crimes per one thousand residents, it is not among the communities with the very highest crime rate. It's important to note that crime rates can vary widely depending on various factors such as population density, socioeconomic status, and law enforcement efforts. Glastonbury's relatively higher crime rate may be influenced by a combination of these factors. However, the town's overall reputation for safety and security suggests that residents can still enjoy a peaceful and tranquil environment. As with any community, taking common-sense precautions and staying informed about local safety measures can help residents mitigate potential risks and maintain their well-being.
