Northport, AL

 

Northport is a city in Tuscaloosa County in the west-central part of the State of Alabama. Located on the Black Warrior River across from downtown Tuscaloosa, it is currently the 17th largest city in Alabama. It was incorporated in 1871. It is part of the Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area.

As Northport is adjacent to the larger city of Tuscaloosa, many residents work in Tuscaloosa or other parts of Tuscaloosa County. Although the two cities share a land boundary, much of their boundary (and historically all of the boundary) is the Black Warrior River. What is Northport, AL is known for?

In 1920, Northport schools became part of the Tuscaloosa County School System. The next year, Northport Elementary was built "on the site of the old Robinson Race Track between the Byler Road and Crabbe Road". Today, Northport is the site of the annual Kentuck Festival of the Arts, a long-established, nationally recognized event that draws people to the area from across the country. This two-day event features 300 invited artists, legendary music, southern folklife, and outstanding children's activities.
