Alexander City, AL
Alexander City, known to locals as "Alex City", is the largest city in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, United States. It has been the largest community in Tallapoosa County since 1910. It is known for Lake Martin with its 750 miles (1,210 km) of wooded shoreline and 44,000 acres (18,000 ha) of water. Lake Martin stands on the Tallapoosa River and offers boating, swimming, fishing, golfing, and camping. Many neighborhoods and luxury homes are located on the lake.
Alexander City was incorporated in 1872 as Youngsville, after its founder James Young. In 1873, the Savannah and Memphis Railroad came to the city. The city was renamed in honor of the railroad's President Edward Porter Alexander, hero of the Battle of Gettysburg for the Confederate States. On July 20, 1897, George Richardson was lynched.

Alexander City has a rich and varied history. Beginning with its Indian heritage and running through frontier roots, natural resources have always been important. That was amplified in 1926 when an Alabama Power project created the area's most recognizable natural asset -- Lake Martin. Alexander City was incorporated in 1872 as Youngsville, after its founder James Young. In 1873, the Savannah and Memphis Railroad came to the city. The city was renamed in honor of the railroad's President Edward Porter Alexander, hero of the Battle of Gettysburg for the Confederate States. On July 20, 1897, George Richardson was lynched. On June 13, 1902, at 1 pm, a fire broke out in the Alexander City Machine shop and destroyed much of the town. The district includes a textile mill building, formerly the Avondale Mills, which closed in 2006 and is now known as Parkdale Mills. It includes a total of 428 contributing buildings and a contributing site, as well as 79 non-contributing buildings or structures, in an area roughly between Rose Ave. and Scott St., Hillabee St., and 7th St. in Alexander City. It includes two sections that were developed at the same time: the Avondale Mill Village which was built and operated by the Avondale Mill Company, and the adjacent Oak Lawn neighborhood, whose residents also worked for the mill. The mill village includes a textile mill, workers' houses, a superintendent's house, and two churches.
