What Services Can You Expect From a Personal Trainer?
There are things a personal trainer can offer aside from exercise and dietary assistance. A trainer can drastically improve not only your physical but also your mental health by offering support and guidance when needed. They also offer friendship through understanding and compassion.
- Exercise knowledge and development
- Dietary assistance
- Client self-sufficiency
- Friendship
- Encouragement
- Education
- Support
- Motivation
- Gym time management skills
- Reassurance
Why Hire a Personal Trainer?
If you've never worked with a personal trainer before, you may wonder what makes it so different from working out alone or in the gym. But having a pro by your side (or even on-screen) does make a world of difference for several reasons.
1. Social connection and partnership
One of the biggest perks of working with a personal trainer is the connection you form with another person who is committed to you and your goals. Especially when you work out with someone in real life, the link becomes very personal since you could potentially spend a lot of time with this person.
2. Someone to spot you and correct your form
One of the keys to avoiding injury and learning how to do exercises properly is having a trainer teach you the correct form. Usually, the easiest way to do this is by watching someone perform an exercise correctly in person and trying to mimic that. Having someone who can give hands-on corrections is also helpful, especially if you are new to exercise or a specific workout.
3. Motivation
Like a fitness-savvy accountability buddy, your personal trainer is there to make sure you stay motivated and committed to your workout. One of the most motivating factors in a workout routine is seeing or feeling results, which is something a trainer can help you do. They can also help troubleshoot if you're not getting the results you want.
How Long Are Personal Training Sessions?
The most common session length for personal training is 1 hour, this is down to several factors. To start with, many PTs believe that an hour is an ample amount of time to get a complete workout completed. This is not always the case, and many people can neither afford the cost of one-hour sessions nor have the time to complete them. A secondary factor may be down to the trainer themselves, as hour-long sessions not only provide them with more income than shorter sessions, but they are also easier to organize. The truth is that not every client needs this amount of time to reach their goals, and in some cases, it may even be detrimental to their motivation and progress. I’d say the standard 1-hour session should only be used in specific situations, which I’ll dive deeper into later in the article. Of course, there are various ways you could tailor workout routines for people, so for simplicity in my following examples of workouts, each client would have only been able to train once per week with me, meaning that a full-body workout needed to be completed.
Should I Get A Personal Trainer?
Hiring a personal trainer is a big decision (and often a big financial commitment), but it can be well worth your time, even if you can only work with one on a short-term basis. A personal trainer can help tailor a custom plan just for you and provide invaluable support and accountability in your fitness journey. No matter if you're just starting, or maybe you took a break from working out and want to get back into it, a trainer is the perfect person to make sure you are doing exercises correctly and making the most of your time at the gym.
Where Can I Train with an In-Home Trainer?
Possible places where you can train with your in-home personal trainer:
- Your apartment or home.
- Your office or apartment building gym. (Some building gyms require some information from us which we gladly provide. Please confirm with your building and provide us will all the necessary information before booking your first session.)
- The great outdoors! Have a favorite place in the park? Running route? Bike ride? Or just want to mix it up with an outdoor workout?
How to Find a Personal Trainer
To start, look at local gyms and fitness centers. They usually have their own trainers who work there. Trainers at gyms are often more affordable than trainers who work independently.
You can search online. Use local business review sites to find highly rated trainers in your area.
Asking friends or family members is a great way to find a personal trainer you're likely to get along with. Find out if anyone you know has had a great experience with a coach in your area. You can also ask people who belong to your gym for recommendations or references for the personal trainers there.
Who Will Benefit from In-Home Personal Training
The In-Home personal training option is great for those with obstacles such as:
- Busy Schedule
- Injuries
- Special Considerations
- Privacy
- Convenience
- Location
The In-Home personal training option is ideal for those who want individual attention with a top-notch personal trainer in the privacy of their own home.
The Role of a Personal Trainer
1, Demonstrate and maintain a working knowledge of human anatomy and the concepts of functional exercise, basic nutritional needs, and fundamental principles of exercise science
2. Show the ability to design and execute individual and small group exercise fitness programs tailored to the needs and attainable goals of each apparently healthy client in a safe and effective way
3. Understand the need for and importance of screening and client assessment and demonstrate proficiency in conducting these evaluations initially and progressively
4. Help clients reach health and fitness goals through appropriate cardiovascular, flexibility, and resistance exercise
5. Demonstrate the ability to motivate others in an encouraging and uplifting way toward improving overall fitness and health
6. Maintain personal integrity, client confidentiality, and professional standards for best practice
7. Commit to self-improvement, self-awareness, continuous learning, personal growth, and development in personal health, fitness, and mental capacity
The Different Types Of Personal Trainers
Different types of personal trainers have different styles and training personalities to meet different needs. Different personalities need to experience different teaching and training methods for them to meet their goals. Some personal training styles can be too soft or too extreme and vigorous for different people.
Physique/Physical Trainers
These types of personal trainers strive to help people achieve their physical goals. They prescribe calorie-cutting diets, start physical workouts, increase cardio, and bring out the best possible outcome for the clients. If your goal is to strengthen your core or gain more muscles, this is the kind of personal training you want to do. Physical trainers, however, do not focus on lifestyle changes. This means that if your goal is to lose weight, you will most certainly lose it.
Performance Personal Trainers
Performance personal trainers only specialize in performance. In the fitness industry, people who specifically train for performance are usually athletes or people who enjoy performance activities like running. Performance personal trainers focus on crafting workouts that increase power, speed, and strength. Some sections of performance personal training include powerlifting, and weight lifting, among others. If you’re looking to get into this kind of fitness, you can look for a certified strength and conditioning specialist. If they are certified, you can tell that they are good at what they do and you’ll getting training from a professional
Lifestyle Personal Trainers
Unlike physical trainers, lifestyle trainers offer so much more based on strategy. They form a goal for their trainees and help them with a healthy diet. They teach them how to eat right, show them how to train the right way, and how to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle. These types of personal trainers understand the mental roadblocks that people go through when attempting to change their lifestyles. They know everything that keeps them from reaching their goals. These types of trainers are very good for people who face serious life issues like self-doubt, a disorder, or self-esteem issues, this can be good for you.
Top 6 Misconceptions about In-Home Personal Training
1. Personal Trainers ONLY help you workout.
When you bring a personal trainer into your weekly fitness routine they help you with so much more than just the workout! A personal trainer helps you to understand your body and its specific fitness needs! Tailoring workouts to your fitness level helps you to reach realistic goals in smaller increments. Personal trainers also (without you even realizing it) inspire a healthy lifestyle. Your in-home personal trainers will help to improve your fitness routine and habits all from your home base. In-home personal training with a personal trainer additionally gives the trainer a deeper understanding and insight into your fitness levels and needs!
2. Your personal trainer is going to yell at you the whole time!
Working out with a personal trainer for the first time can be nerve-racking… simply because you do not know what to expect! The misconception that your personal trainer will yell at you the whole time is simply not true! We think this ideology stems from the media, television shows, and movies! In the real world when you have an in-home personal trainer they want to help you achieve your goals in an effective manner, not an overly aggressive one!
3. All personal trainers are “Ripped”
Studying the craft of personal training and understanding exactly how the body works should be qualities you're looking for in your personal trainer. Someone being “ripped” does not necessarily mean they understand how to get your body into its best shape! In fact, not all personal trainers have a six-pack or are in the absolute best shape. They are real people with a passion for fitness and a certified understanding of how to help their clients achieve their fitness goals!
4. Personal training is only for people who have no idea what they are doing!
Personal training is most definitely not just for people that do not know what they are doing when it comes to exercising. An objective perspective on how well you are performing exercise techniques is extremely important! You may think that you have got your squats and crunches down solid but many people actually are performing their daily exercises the wrong way! Creating more long-term injuries and extenuating stress on their bodies. In-home personal trainers help you to perfect your training techniques all from the comfort of your home!
5. Your in-home personal trainer is going to rob you!
Letting someone into your home that you don't know can be offsetting! That is why it is important that whoever you let into your home you know you can trust. Utilizing an in-home personal training company like Svetness is extremely comforting. All of our trainers including the trainer you are working with are background checked, insured, and certified and can lay those concerns to rest. When working with an in-home personal trainer you should be focused on gaining muscle not losing your belongings.
6. Hiring an in-home personal trainer is going to fix all of your problems.
Unfortunately hiring an in-home personal trainer is not going to fix all of your fitness problems. Establishing and maintaining healthy fitness habits and a clean diet is something that has to come from within you! Hiring a personal trainer helps you to establish a fitness routine, keep you inspired and monitor your success in order to react and change your workouts accordingly. What it does not do is help keep you accountable 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Checking in with your personal trainer during your sessions on your health habits is extremely important because they are able to assist you on your fitness journey and support you during weekly workout sessions.
Top 5 Benefits of In-Home Personal Training
Not everyone needs a personal trainer. Folks who are naturally athletic and who enjoy exercising are typically self-motivated and can develop and maintain a good fitness program on their own. But plenty of people are new to exercise or have had bad experiences in the past that they need to overcome. If you're considering working with a personal trainer, you'll need to decide if you should work with a personal trainer who is based at a gym or rec center, or one who will come to your home or office.
Especially for people who are new to exercise or who have jam-packed schedules, an in-home personal trainer is the way to go. Here are the top five benefits of working with a personal trainer who brings the workout to you.
1. Save time. When you hire an in-home personal trainer, you make the most of your time. There's no packing a bag of clothing and gear, no traveling to the gym, no searching for a parking spot. Your trainer arrives at the scheduled time, and you spend your allotted time working out. When time is tight, in-home personal training lets you spend more time getting fit and less time in transit.
2. Privacy and comfort. Admit it. If your body is less than perfect, it can be intimidating to work out in a public gym. It can feel like all eyes are on you--especially the parts that jiggle when you move. An in-home personal training program lets you work out in the privacy and comfort of your own home. You control the temperature, the music, and the cleanliness, and you get to exercise without an audience.
3. No equipment is needed. In-home personal training typically focuses on exercise techniques that require little or no gear. If you already own fitness equipment, your trainer can include it in your workouts. And if you don't have any gear, don't worry; your trainer will bring everything you need for a great workout. You'll learn to be fit anywhere: at home, at your in-laws' house, in a hotel room, in your office.
4. Personal attention. In-home personal training gives you one-on-one attention from a trainer with no distractions. The personal training you get at a gym or rec center is often standardized and not exactly personal. When you hire an in-home personal trainer, you'll get a fitness program that is tailored just for you. It will work around your limitations and help you reach your fitness goals quickly and efficiently.
5. Accountability. It's pretty easy to talk yourself out of a trip to the gym. But when the trainer shows up at your door, all your excuses are out the window. Your scheduled appointments will keep you on track toward your fitness goal, and your trainer will help keep you motivated to exercise.
Important Equipment for In-Home Personal Training
These days, there are some really awesome pieces of portable fitness equipment that you can use with your clients. A few of the essentials include:
- A High-Quality Workout Mat or Yoga Mat
- Adjustable dumbells. There are several companies that make these, but Powerblocks has been around for more than 20 years. They are durable, compact, and have awesome warranties and customer service. Another popular adjustable dumbbell is the Bowflex Selectech System.
- A Portable Bench or a Club Step. The Original Club step is not less expensive than a travel bench, but they are lightweight and durable. They are great for other uses such as doing lower-body cardio/agility drills and even lower-body strength work such as step-ups, lunges, calf raises, etc. They are also perfect for doing dumbbell bench presses and any other exercise that is traditionally done on a workout bench.
- Stopwatch or interval timer. You can use a stopwatch to time exercise intervals and rest periods.
- Anything else: bit bands, medicine balls, step, stability balls, etc.
The Essential Space You Will Need
If you are doing most of your personal training sessions in your own home, you will need to ensure that you create enough space so that your client feels comfortable. I typically recommend having an area no smaller than 10′ x 10′. Preferably it would be more like 15 feet or 20 feet on each wall. This is so that you will have enough space for side-to-side movements without thinking about space constraints. Functional training requires much more space than basic weightlifting exercises. If you are doing your exercises outside, you should have no problem with space constraints at all, and you get to enjoy the sun simultaneously!
What Makes A Good Personal Trainer?
Competition for personal training clients is fierce, and some trainers market themselves on their unique expertise or athletic coaching experience, while others claim to do it all. So how do you know if your trainer is worth their hourly fee? Regardless of the type of trainer you select, it's helpful to review the following checklist and give your trainer an objective assessment of your own. If your trainer doesn't pass each item on the list, you may want to continue looking for a trainer who does.
1. Education and Certifications
You should check to see if your trainer is certified. There are many degrees and certifications for personal trainers, so it's not always easy to distinguish the good from the mediocre. Just because a trainer has a certification doesn't necessarily mean they are a great coach, but it's a starting point. The world of fitness, nutrition, and health is evolving quickly, and staying current is challenging even for the most dedicated professionals.
2. They Perform Assessments
A competent, qualified personal trainer not only has a plan but also documents your plan and tracks your progress. Without a baseline assessment, fitness training is like setting off on a journey with no map: you can still have a lot of fun, challenge yourself, learn something, and maybe even get results, but it's far less efficient and focused than when you have a map.
3. They Focus on Progression and Rest
After you've completed your baseline assessment and had a fairly extensive discussion about your goals, history, and lifestyle, a great trainer will do some homework. By the time you return for your first session, they'll have spent time reviewing your fitness assessment results, your daily commitments, and your overall goals, and they will have determined a reasonably detailed training plan. This is your road map. It should have a beginning, middle, and end. It will likely be about three months long with monthly checkpoints, adjustments, and rest days built in. To improve, you'll be doing some tough workouts (only after you learn proper technique and build up your core stability). These strenuous efforts will progress naturally and be followed by rest days. You will also continue adding intensity and new exercises in a progressive manner that makes sense.
4. They Have Happy Clients
Most great trainers have happy, successful clients. You can ask for references and call a few of their past clients, if you have permission, and ask about their experience with that trainer. You can also have a meet and greet session to introduce yourself and get to know each other. Being able to get along and mesh well with your trainer is vital to a successful relationship.
5. They Believe In You
If your trainer doesn't believe in you, reaching your goals will be more difficult. You are hiring a trainer precisely because you don't want to go it alone. An excellent personal trainer believes that every client has the capacity and the potential to succeed. They will get you excited to train, energize your workouts, and show you how to get where you want to go.
What to Look for in a Personal Trainer
To make sure your workouts are safe and successful, look for the following in your personal trainer:
Certification. Your trainer should be certified by one of the several organizations that certify personal trainers. Make sure the certifying organization is recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). This ensures that the certification meets appropriate standards so you can be confident that your trainer has had a great education.
Education. Your personal trainer should have an educational background in exercise science, kinesiology, or another subject that covers anatomy and physiology.
CPR & first aid certification. Working out is relatively safe, but accidents can happen. Make sure your personal training candidate knows what to do in an emergency. You may also want to ask if the gym has an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Liability insurance. Make sure your potential coach is properly insured, just in case.
Get everything in writing. A great personal trainer will give you paperwork that outlines the details of your relationship including fees, cancellation policies, liability, and other important information.
Questions to Ask Potential Personal Trainers
Once you've established the basics, make sure the trainer will be a good fit for your goals. You may want to ask them:
1. What is their motivational style and demeanor? Working with a coach who offers positive motivation is best. Avoid coaches who use negativity to motivate their clients.
2. How much experience do they have? Find out about their past work experience in the field.
3. What types of clients do they usually work with? Do they work with people who are similar to you?
4. Do they have experience with your needs? If you have special fitness interests, like running a marathon, or if you have an injury, find out if the trainer has experience working with people like you.
5. What is their schedule like? Find out if their availability can work with your schedule.
6. How much do they charge? Make sure their fees will fit your budget.
7. What are their cancellation policies? Some trainers require that you still pay for your session if you cancel on short notice. Others have more flexible policies.
8. Do you have to get a gym membership as well? Some trainers work at gyms that require monthly fees in addition to the training costs.
9. Do they offer packages? You may be able to save money in the long term by purchasing multiple sessions at one time.
10. What equipment and facilities do they use? Some personal trainers come to your home or office and bring fitness equipment with them. Others only work in a gym. Either way, find out if they have the equipment that suits your interests.
11. Can they give you references? Contact their references to find out if their past clients have had positive experiences. You can also read reviews online.
