FAQs:

What is Human Design?

Much like astrological birth charts, Human Design is a system based on your exact time, date, and place of birth, but it further incorporates your dominant chakras to create your personalized body graph. Together, these elements create a synthesis of the esoteric and exoteric systems to give a graphical depiction of the forces at work, imprinting us and influencing our experience of the world. It's how we experience and respond to the world. All that’s needed is your birthday, time of birth, and location of birth, and experts can offer a surprising insight. It all starts with what is known as a bodygraph, and it can help you understand how you are designed to engage with the world and where you are susceptible to your environment, influence, and conditioning.

How Does Human Design Work?

To understand how the system works, it is important to become familiar with the fundamental concept that forms the foundation of this system. A fundamental aspect of Human Design is based on what is scientifically known as the Neutrino.

Neutrinos are unusual particles that carry an infinitesimal amount of mass. About 3 trillion neutrinos, and the material information they carry, pass through every square inch of the planet per second. Our Sun produces about 70 percent of all neutrinos that travel through our solar system, with the remaining 30 percent emitted by other stars in our Galaxy, and a small amount from the planet Jupiter.

In 2015, the scientists Takaaki Kajita (Super-Kamiokande Collaboration) and Arthur B. McDonald (Sudbury Neutrino Observatory Collaboration) were awarded a Nobel Prize for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that neutrinos have mass. Ra Uru Hu published this as the science behind the Human Design System as early as 1991.

Since Neutrinos have an infinitesimally small amount of mass, as the stream passes through us it leaves information. It is a stream of information, and within each of us exist particles that connect us to the stream. At the moment of birth, we are imprinted by the information carried by the neutrino stream via the planets. This imprint is reflected within your Human Design Chart, and determines your particular Design. This information provides us with the knowledge to understand our nature, potential, and forms of interaction.

What is a Human Design Chart?

A human design chart is more than just the bodygraph. On the chart to the right of the bodygraph is a collection of numbers in black next to the symbols of the planets. These calculations outline the different characteristics of a personality. People are consciously aware of these traits, leading them to believe this is who they are.

The red column of the design chart is calculated using an 88-degree rotation of the sun, spanning approximately 89 days before the moment of birth. These numbers outline the characteristics of body consciousness and the nature of the unconscious. By learning about the previously unrealized elements of your identity, it’s possible to better determine your decisions and actions.

What is the Purpose of Human Design?

The purpose of Human Design is to support you in experiencing personal alignment. When we are in alignment, we feel less resistance in our life and more harmony, abundance, and ease. Instead of swimming upstream, we learn how to get in alignment with the flow of energy that can support us in living our purpose, with less effort and struggle.

Is Human Design a Real Thing?

Human Design does draw on spiritual wisdom throughout the ages, it is an inherently empirical practice that involves science and psychology. It was developed in the 1980s by Ra Uru Hu, the founder of the system, and has since been validated by scientific findings.

What is a Bodygraph?

A bodygraph is an important part of the Human Design chart, a graphic illustration that explains your energetic flow, showing the way you operate and interact naturally. It is situated within a Rave Mandala, which includes the I’Ching, Western Zodiac, Sephirot of the Kabbalah, hexagrams, and the chakra system.

The bodygraph shows a person’s definitions, which are the colored areas of the chart, and their openness, which is anything left white. Definitions remain consistent throughout life and explain who someone is as a person. Openness unveils areas where someone is susceptible to conditioning. When this conditioning occurs, it can result in a state known as “Not-Self.”

What Sets Human Design Apart from Personality Tests?

Like Human Design, personality tests like Enneagram and Myers-Briggs are tools that can offer insight into how you may be different from others. While we can find great meaning and support in systems like Enneagram and Myers-Briggs, they are self-assessments, whereas Human Design is not. In personality type systems, you are answering questions about yourself to see what type you fall into, whereas Human Design is based on a calculation from your birth date, time, and place. It is similar to Western Astrology since it is based on the information of your birth, but Human Design also uses specific energy systems (chakras) in addition to astrology at your time of birth.

Human Design is the inherent qualities that you were born with and will have your entire life. This difference between self-assessment systems and Human Design is important because, from a very young age, we learn and adapt to take on qualities that will make us be loved and accepted. It can be easy to define who we are based on who we think we should be instead of who we are, without even having the conscious awareness that we’re doing it. Your Human Design shows you with great specificity what your soul inherently is, not who you have been conditioned to be.

Can Human Design Predict the Future?

Similar to astrology, Human Design won't predict or offer definitive answers about your future. However, understanding your body graph can help you analyze certain aspects of your life, and potentially change your habits to become more productive, happier, and so on.

Is Human Design Based on Astrology?

Human Design combines astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, and Vedic philosophy, centering around the division of personalities into five energy types alleged to indicate how someone is supposed to exchange energy with the world: Manifestors, Generators, Manifesting Generators, Projectors, and Reflectors.

In Human Design analysis, planets are displayed in a type of horoscope called a bodygraph. The bodygraph shows the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching at various locations on the body. It is sometimes shown within a mandala, overlaid on the 12 signs of the zodiac. Human Design also addresses dietary regimens and ideal environments for living, working, and relationships.

What Do I Ask in a Human Design Reading?

Human Design has layers, and the more you live in energetic alignment with these layers as they can be applied to your life, the more you will find out about yourself and unlock the next layer of your blueprint.

If you are starting out, you may just want to have insight into what your energy type is, and how to live with your authority and how to tell when you are on or off track. As you start to learn what that feels like, you may want to know about how you can thrive in relationships, business, creativity or even if you have been applying your focus and energy to the wrong places.

Human Design can show us the gifts and talents that others can see in us, but we cannot (our design). The gold that comes from moving into energetic correctness by deconditioning through our centres is where you will find your forward motion comes into completeness.

Then we can move into the Primary Health System and how we live, interact and consume life. This truly is a whole life approach to energetic alignment and living your fullest potential.

A Brief History of the Human Design

Human Design is a relatively new system originated by Alan Robert Krakower who claimed it was revealed to him during a mystical experience in 1987.

In 1992 he published a book called The Human Design System under the pseudonym Ra Uru Hu and established a successful practice and school, training many students to give readings and teachings based on the system.

Through the years he has revealed more and more nuances and aspects of the system till his passing away in 2011.

Sure enough, Human Design is in a way nothing new, as it is a system that joins together ancient wisdom traditions – Astrology, Energy Chakras, I-Ching, and Kabbalah – to recent understandings of modern science: neutrinos physics and genetics.

The result is nevertheless stunning: not just a mere synthesis, but a real cosmic blueprint of humans as they were designed and therefore meant to be and live.

The Four Principles of Human-Centered Design

Human-centered design has four major principles such as:

1. Understand and Address the Core Problems.

Solve the fundamental, underlying issues, not the symptoms. Core issues often include the people’s lack of understanding of the complexity an of the entire system, misaligned resources and reward structures, and the disruptions caused by the work environment, with frequent interruptions, conflicting requirements, overly-complex technology, and the need for multiple transitions among technologies systems, and people leading to continual interruptions as well as lack of complete communication between elements.

2. Be People-Centered.

Much of today’s systems, procedures, and devices are technology-centered, designed around the capabilities of the technology with people being asked to fill in the parts that the technology cannot do. People-centered means changing this, starting with the needs and abilities of people. It means considering all the people who are involved, taking account of the history, culture, beliefs, and environment of the community. The best way to do this is to let those who live in the community provide the answers.

3. Use an Activity-Centered Systems Approach.

Design must focus upon the entire activity under consideration, not just isolated components. Moreover, activities do not exist in isolation: They are components of complex sociotechnical systems. Fixing or improving a small, local issue is often beneficial, but local optimization can result in sub-optimal global results. Focusing upon support of the activities is more important than optimization of the individual components. Systems involve multiple complex feedback and feed-forward loops, some with time delays measured in days or months. There are often tensions, conflicts, and differing perspectives among the multiple participants. Potential solutions have to be developed with the assistance and buy-in from all parties. Experts can provide essential analyses and approaches, but unless those most affected by the issues play a major role, in assuring that the suggestions are appropriate to the culture, the environment, and the capabilities and goals of the community, the results are apt to be unworkable and unsatisfactory.

4. Use Rapid Iterations of Prototyping and Testing.

Whatever the initial suggestions are for innovation or improvement, they probably are imperfect, incomplete, too difficult or expensive to implement, or unsuitable for the particular location. Implementation of changes requires patience and fortitude to try numerous trials, rethinking and repeating until the outcomes are good enough for deployment. People accept repeated trials if they are active participants in their design and evaluation, where the trials are understood to be tests, not solutions, and where each is done quickly. Human-centered design starts with quick approximations, often having participants play-act the workings, providing rapid feedback. With each iteration the prototype becomes more refined and usable. Note that these tests must be applied to the intended recipients. Administrators and those responsible for devising the ideas under test should be (unobtrusive) observers, not participants.

The Human Design Chart Properties

1. Type:

This is probably the main thing that people start with when talking about human design. You will be one of four types. Each type has its characteristics. Each type has specific energetic centers that are either defined or undefined. Each type also has its own Aura type that corresponds with it!

2. Strategy:

One of the most important takeaways if you are just starting! Each type has its specific strategy. Each strategy is tied to a type that allows that type’s energy to be used most efficiently.

3. Not-Self Theme:

Each type has a not-self theme, which means when that type is not honoring its energy effectively it will feel these negative emotions.

4. Authority:

Each specific person has an inner authority that isn’t tied to your type. Your authority is where your power is, it is the space from which you should be making decisions if you are to correctly use your energy.

5. Profile:

The numbers here correspond to lines that each have their characteristics.

6. Gates:

The gates are the numbers you see in your chart. Every single number corresponds to a specific property of that number.  When a specific number is circled in your chart that means that that particular number plays a strong role in your dynamics.

7. Channels:

Channels are the paths of energy denoted by the lines connecting each energetic center. Like the gates, each channel has a specific separate property as well. You can think of the channels as something of a chemical reaction… two gates with their properties come together to form something new with their properties. Channels that are colored in play a strong role in your dynamics as well! These are called “definitions”.

8. Definition:

Where you see a channel in your chart fully colored in (in either black or red or a combination) These gates (numbers) and/or channel. (pair of numbers connected) denote something that is strong and steady in yourself. If you have multiple definitions in your chart it is important to know where these connections are located and also if they are connected to your inner authority or not.

9. Energetic Centers

Each energetic center is denoted by one of the shapes in your chart. Each energetic center in your chart will be either defined (colored in) or undefined (not colored in).

10. Red and/or Black

If you will see certain aspects of your chart colored in black or red or a mix of both In this specific chart. Red denotes your Design (or subconscious pattern) and Black denotes your Personality (or conscious pattern)

11. Big Arrows

A. Arrow #1 top left = Digestion (includes food as well as digestion of new information)

- If your arrow is pointing toward the right: Active digestion, you enjoy routine

- If your arrow is pointing to the left: Passive digestion, you take life as it comes (and should eat intuitively)

B. Arrow #2 bottom left = Environment (what kind of environment suits you best)

- If your arrow is pointing toward the right: new experiences serve you

- If your arrow is pointing to the left: consistent steadiness serves you

C. Arrow #3 top right = Awareness (how you view the world)

- If your arrow is pointing toward the right: right-brained creativity

- If your arrow is pointing to the left: left-brained logic

D. Arrow #4 bottom right = Perspective (your manifesting power type)

- If your arrow is pointing toward the right: General Manifestor (you manifest from the general idea or feeling of things)

- If your arrow is pointing to the left: Specific Manifestor (you should find the exact thing that you want before trying to manifest anything)

12. Small Arrows:

Now on your chart, there will be small arrows floating around your numbers in your design/ personality lists. These arrows indicate that whichever gate they are located at (the number) that that gate is held either in its exalted or detrimental state.

- an up arrow denotes the exalted (positive attributes) of the gate it’s next to.

- a down arrow indicates the detriment (negative attributes) of the gate it’s next to.

13. Asterisk *

If you have an asterisk next to one of your numbers this denotes an emphasis on both an exalted and detrimental state of that particular gate for you. To me, this means that this gate is especially important that you to understand for yourself as well as how it’s connected to the rest of your energetic circuitry!

14. Cross of Incarnation

Everyone has their specific cross of incarnation. Each cross has a different meaning. It reflects your life’s trajectory. I would recommend looking up your specific Incarnation Cross online for the more specific insight! This Cross is not “fate” it can just be a theme for your life. There are four gates (numbers) listed next to your Cross of Incarnation that are important!

15. Godhead

“Look for the gate of your Personality Sun to find your Godhead and its theme. This archetype is what keeps you from recognizing how deeply conditioned your perceptions are about your life. Where you can get into trouble is by taking the conditioning to its distortion and thinking that your Godhead is THE God.

16. Mandala

The human design system also corresponds to the hexagrams of the I ching mandala (which plays with the themes of yin and yang or duality… more on the yin-yang HERE), pictured below. Each gate or number corresponds to its numbered hexagram shown in the wheel below. The hexagrams or sets of lines are made up of split lines (yin) and solid lines (yang) energies.

The Six Profile Lines in Human Design

Each of our individual Profiles is made up of two lines. Each line has an energy of its own as well as new energy it forms when combined with one of the other Profile lines (there are 12 possible Profiles). The six lines described here are part of I'Ching's influence on Human Design.

As you can see, these six lines are also separated into the upper trigram and lower trigram, which are comprised of "personal" and "interpersonal" themes. 1-3 is considered personal themes, which means they are about the experience of the self. The interpersonal themes are about the experience between the self and the other.

Your Profile will manifest in your life depending on whether it is conscious or unconscious, as well as what type you are. It will also affect, and be affected by, many other aspects of your chart. Here are the six lines:

1. The Investigator

Curious, insecure, empathic, intuitive, and creative, the Investigator energy is driven to get to the truth of everything. Once the truth has been established, confidence emerges. The Investigator is both the student and the teacher.

2. The Hermit

The Hermit energy needs ample alone time to be immersed in its interests and natural talents. The keyword for the Hermit is "natural," so much so that it may not even realize that the things that come easily to it are, indeed, special! The world will let it know this and call it out to share itself with the world.

3. The Martyr

Relatable, anarchic, and constantly evolving, the Martyr is here to try things out. It wants to test the theories that have been established and see how they hold up in the real world. It has bumped into things and learned through trial and error; it understands that everything it has gone through was for a purpose, and there are no mistakes. If a connection (person/place/thing) is not feeding this mutative process of discovery, it will break ties with that thing and open space for the next growth experience.

4. The Opportunist

The Opportunist energy is all about externalizing and connecting with its network through its natural friendliness and ability to recognize the resource that is human connection. This isn't just about unconditional friendship, though - if the network isn't reciprocating the energy that was invested into it, it will seek another network.

5. The Heretic

Mysterious, paranoid, clever, and pragmatic, the Heretic has a projection field that can convince others that it always has the answer to the solution; it is here to save the day. In reality, it is here to know when to come out, jump in, and share its wisdom, and when to retreat, understanding that it cannot always fix everything (and doesn't need to!).

6. The Role Model

The Role Model has a visionary quality - it is all about perspective. Made up of three different stages - experimenter, observer (also known as being “on the roof”), and leader, it matures as it ages and gains a new perspective from each phase. It also has a perfectionist streak since it can see the possibility of a better world. The role model is all about putting in the work of getting its hands dirty, sitting back and reflecting, and then guiding humanity in a new direction.

Human Design Types and Strategies

There are four different types of Human Design, and every person fits into one of the types. They are:

Generators

Generators make up about 70% of the population, and their main strategy is to respond. They have an open and enveloping aura, and their signature is satisfaction. When they are operating as their Not-Self, they are frustrated. It is wise for generators to learn more about themselves.

Projectors

Projectors consist of about 20% of the population. Their strategy is to wait for the invitation to find success and avoid bitterness. Their auras are focused and absorbing, and their goal is to learn about and understand others.

Manifestors

These people make up about 9% of the population, and their strategy is to inform. They seek peace but can act in anger when they are in their Not-Self. They have a closed and repelling aura, and their goal is to understand their impact on others.

Reflectors

The final type represents just 1% of the population, and their strategy is to wait for an entire lunar cycle before making a decision. This helps them to find clarity and surprises in life while avoiding disappointment. They tend to have a resistant and sampling aura, which allows them to learn to reflect rather than identify.

Understanding the Different Authority Types

Your authority, to put it simply, is how you make decisions. Your body graph is represented by the energy centers that are filled in and defined the most. For instance, some people don't have a defined splenic center, so following their gut isn't the best advice for them. They may be more logical instead. "Everyone has intuition, but we all access it differently, which is where Human Design comes in to explain the best way for you to make decisions.

Emotional Authority

This authority type feels everything and needs to ride out their emotional waves before making a decision. "If they're happy, they will say yes, and if they're sad, they'll say no — and may regret that decision later on. They need to wait to be in a calm space, as long as it takes, and get off of that roller coaster of feelings before deciding what's best for themselves.

Sacral Authority

This kind of decision-making is linked to a feeling of excitement, a very visceral feeling in the body. Sacral authorities need to light up inside. If the decision isn't doing for them, it's not the right one.

Splenic Authority

Gut feelings drive your decisions. You make choices in an instant. A voice in your head tells you what you should or shouldn't do. Your intuition may not make sense at times, but trust that it knows things that you don't. These people can act on their feelings asap.

Ego Authority

Your ego is what people mean when they say to follow their heart's desire. For those with their ego energy center filled in, this sentiment has never rung more true. It may seem selfish to some, but if your heart is pulling you toward something, you need to do it. You'll recognize it by the feeling in your chest.

G Center Authority

Unlike the previous four authorities, which result in going inward to select the best option for them, G Center Authority people need to talk things out and gain other perspectives before they can know their next steps to take. Also known as Self-Projected Authority, these people don't necessarily have to take advice from others, but by talking things out, they'll reach clarity about what they truly desire.

Mental Authority

Mental authority — also called Environmental Authority or Sounding Board Authority —  is another way of reaching conclusions by observing the outside world instead of through internal messages. Unlike the G Center Authority, though, those with Mental Authority also need to take note of their surroundings to make the right choices. They have to talk things out and observe in environments that make them feel good.

No Inner Authority

These people, specifically Reflectors or Outer Reflectors, don't have any of their chakras defined, so they, again, need to wait 28 days to determine the best option. They feel differently every day and can be influenced by the outside world very easily, so they need as much time as possible to figure out which energy is theirs and which is coming from other people.

4 Different Kinds of Definitions in the Bodygraph

Definition is what is consistent and reliable within us; it is what creates our Type and determines our Strategy and Authority. Definition in the BodyGraph shows us a schematic of the way energy flows within us. It also determines how we operate, how we interact with others, and what we look for in others.

A crucial aspect of how we relate to and connect with others is that some of us look for close, tribal connections to bond, while others function more independently. There is a broad spectrum of ways we inter-connect, depending on the particular configuration of our Human Design BodyGraph.

There are four different kinds of Definition:

- Single: a continuous connection

- Split definition: two areas of definition separate from each other

- Triple split definition: three separated areas

- And rarely, Quadruple split definitions: four separate areas

- Very rarely, there is no definition

Most important, Definition or not leads to the core of Human Design knowledge and its value to you, Type.

7 Benefits of Human Design System

NO. 1: DISCOVER SELF-LOVE Did you know that there is a map of yourself that shows how you are unlike anyone else in the world? This map is called the Bodygraph, and it is the centerpiece of the Human Design System.

NO. 2: END SELF-HATRED + UNDO CONDITIONING If you can’t find self-love by discovering your uniqueness, then take a fresh look at how you are beating yourself up. Self-hatred can come from failing to meet expectations and not living up to ideals. Many people make decisions based on what they think they’re missing by comparison to others, or they feel pressure to go out there and “make it happen”, or else.

NO. 3: UNCOVER YOUR GIFTS Human Design shows you your gifts and talents in black and white. The system brings them to you in the form of energies and characteristics that guide you on the finer points of being yourself. You do have a precise purpose and role to play in the world, and your unique gifts describe how you can bring your purpose to fruition. Practically speaking, while Human Design can’t tell you how to make more money, it emphasizes that by sticking with your strengths and your defined modalities, you can create better opportunities for yourself more frequently.

NO. 4: UNDERSTAND YOUR BODY + MANAGE YOUR ENERGY Human Design offers a breakthrough understanding of the body and its mental, physical, and emotional mechanisms, and so learning to clean up your mechanics can help eliminate a lot of internal confusion, stress, and unhappiness. You are a conscious being in control of your machine after all! This mechanical way of looking at yourself may sound cold or unfeeling at first, but learning to use your energy in the right way is completely intuitive, reliable, and joyful.

NO. 5: LEARN A FORMULA TO MAKE DECISIONS It sounds too good to be true, but Human Design is the only tool in the world that gives you a personal operating system for life.

NO. 6: MANAGE BETTER RELATIONSHIPS Better relationships could easily be the number one benefit of knowing your Human Design. However, better relationships always start with you. If you enter into a relationship without first knowing yourself, loving yourself, and having clear boundaries, then chances are your relationships will suffer.

NO. 7: SPEAK A NEW LANGUAGE It’s hard to describe new ideas with old or outdated language. At a certain point, old terminology simply can’t fit into a new paradigm. With that in mind, know that Human Design will require you to acclimate to a few new vocabulary words. Just think of how technology continually adds new words and concepts to your lexicon. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up! But that’s the challenge and the opportunity with a brand new set of ideas: When you level up your awareness to learn something more powerful, you can become more powerful too.
