FAQs:

What is Hormone Balancing?

Hormone balancing, also known as hormone optimization or hormone therapy, is the process of restoring or maintaining the proper balance of hormones in the body.  Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate various functions in the body, such as metabolism, growth, mood, reproduction, and more. When hormone levels are either too high or too low, it can lead to a variety of health issues and symptoms.

What are Hormones?

Hormones are chemicals that coordinate different functions in your body by carrying messages through your blood to your organs, skin, muscles, and other tissues. These signals tell your body what to do and when to do it. Hormones are essential for life and your health. Scientists have identified over 50 hormones in the human body so far.

Hormones and most of the tissues (mainly glands) that create and release them make up your endocrine system. Hormones control many different bodily processes, including:

- Metabolism.

- Homeostasis (constant internal balance).

- Growth and development.

- Sexual function.

- Reproduction.

- Sleep-wake cycle.

- Mood.

What is a Hormonal Imbalance?

A hormonal imbalance happens when you have too much or too little of one or more hormones. It’s a broad term that can represent many different hormone-related conditions. Hormones are powerful signals. For many hormones, having even slightly too much or too little of them can cause major changes to your body and lead to certain conditions that require treatment. Some hormonal imbalances can be temporary, while others are chronic (long-term). In addition, some hormonal imbalances require treatment so you can stay physically healthy, while others may not impact your health but can negatively affect your quality of life.

How are Hormonal Imbalances Diagnosed?

Healthcare providers typically order blood tests to check hormone levels since your endocrine glands release hormones directly into your bloodstream. Certain hormone levels vary drastically throughout the day, so providers may order other tests to measure your levels, such as a glucose tolerance test or insulin tolerance test. Your provider will also ask you about your medical history and symptoms and perform a physical exam.

How Long Does It Take for Hormones to Balance?

Hormone levels and menstrual cycles may return to normal within a few weeks to months after the removal of hormonal IUDs, although it may take longer for some women. For women with non-hormonal IUDs, menstrual cycles and hormone levels may return to their usual pattern quickly. Fertility typically returns immediately after the removal of IUDs. Women may become pregnant as soon as they ovulate, which may be days to weeks after removal.

Can Acupuncture Balance Hormones?

Acupuncture involves the stimulation of the nervous system in the body, which in itself can trigger the release of endorphins that are well known for helping to deal with pain. Although acupuncture can help relieve pain, studies show that it may also help with the production of estrogen, which is a key hormone in women during the menopausal transition.

The reduction of estrogen is a common symptom in menopause as it is involved in the reproductive system, and menopause is considered to signify the ending of the reproductive cycle. The increase of oestrogen produced during acupuncture for menopause could decrease the intensity of some of the menopausal symptoms, including improving the regularity of menstrual cycles.

Can Hormone Imbalance Cause Weight Gain?

Yes, certain hormone imbalances can cause weight gain, including:

1. Hypothyroidism: This condition happens when you have low levels of thyroid hormone, which causes your metabolism to slow down. This can cause weight gain.

2. Cushing’s syndrome: This is a rare condition that happens when your body has too much of a hormone called cortisol. It results in rapid weight gain in your face (sometimes called “moon face”), belly, back of your neck (sometimes called “buffalo hump”) and chest.

3. Menopause: During menopause, many women gain weight due to hormonal changes that cause their metabolism to slow down. It’s important to remember that this type of “hormonal imbalance” is natural and an expected part of life.

Several other factors contribute to weight gain. If you’re experiencing unexpected weight gain or are concerned about your weight, talk to your healthcare provider.

How to Prevent a Hormonal Imbalance?

While many hormonal imbalances aren’t preventable, there are certain things you can do to optimize your overall health, which could help keep your hormones balanced, including:

1. Maintaining a healthy weight.

2. Eating a balanced, healthy diet.

3. Exercising regularly.

4. Managing your stress.

5. Getting enough quality sleep.

6. Managing your chronic health conditions well (if applicable).

7. Quitting smoking or using tobacco products, if you smoke.

Types of Hormone Specialists

The first step in addressing these issues is consulting a healthcare provider who specializes in hormones. Depending on the specific condition, this could include endocrinologists, gynecologists, or integrative medicine practitioners.

Here are the types of hormone specialists:

1. Endocrinologists: These are board-certified physicians specializing in diseases of the endocrine system, which includes glands like the thyroid, pancreas, and adrenal glands.

2. Reproductive Endocrinologists: They focus on fertility and hormone-related reproductive issues.

3. Gynecologists: For women, gynecologists often manage hormone-related conditions such as menopause or PCOS.

4. Integrative Medicine Doctors: They use a holistic approach, combining traditional medicine with alternative therapies to balance hormones.

Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalance

Symptoms of hormonal imbalance depend on what’s out of balance. That being said, here are general symptoms that may be experienced:

1. Fatigue – Frequent in all common types of hormonal imbalance.

2. Irritability – Common in those affected by imbalances in female, male, and stress hormones.

3. Mood swings – common in sex hormone imbalances.

4. Weight changes – High levels of thyroid hormones can cause weight loss, while low thyroid levels and imbalances in female hormones, male hormones, or stress hormones typically cause weight gain.

5. Muscle loss – Most common with male and female sex hormone imbalances.

6. Reduced bone density – Thyroid and sex hormone imbalances can cause bone loss.

7. Increased sensitivity to heat or cold – Abnormally high levels of thyroid hormones can cause heat intolerance, while low levels can make a person oversensitive to cold.

8. Hot flashes and/or night sweats – Very common with female hormone imbalances as well as low testosterone.

9. Sexual disinterest or dysfunction – Most common with male and female sex hormone imbalances.

10. Infertility – Can occur with sex hormone disturbances.

11. Skin changes—All common hormone imbalances can affect the skin. Changes can include severe dryness, thinning, oily skin, and acne outbreaks.

12. Hair loss – Often seen with thyroid problems or low testosterone.

13. Anxiety/depression – Can occur with all common imbalances.

14. Heart rate changes or palpitations – Thyroid dysfunction, sex hormone imbalance, and stress hormone imbalance can all cause these symptoms.

15. Rising cholesterol levels – Low thyroid hormone levels, low testosterone, and estrogen/progesterone imbalances can cause cholesterol levels to rise.

16. Memory problems – Can occur in all common hormone imbalances.

17. Poor focus/concentration – A common symptom of any hormone imbalance.

Causes of Hormonal Imbalance

Hormonal imbalances can arise from a diverse array of sources, ranging from everyday lifestyle choices to complex medical conditions. Understanding these factors is crucial for identifying potential risks and devising effective strategies for management and treatment.

Each of these factors can contribute to a hormonal imbalance, manifesting through various health problems that affect individuals differently, such as:

1. Irregular Periods: Many women experience irregular menstrual cycles due to imbalances in estrogen and progesterone. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can cause periods to be infrequent or prolonged, significantly affecting reproductive health.

2. Diabetes: Imbalances in insulin, a hormone responsible for regulating blood glucose levels, can lead to diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is often the result of autoimmune attacks on insulin-producing cells, while Type 2 involves insulin resistance and is closely linked to diet and lifestyle.

3. Infertility: Hormonal imbalances can affect both male and female fertility. In women, imbalances can disrupt ovulation, while in men, they can impact sperm production and testosterone levels, essential factors in reproductive health.

4. Acne: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly an increase in androgens, can lead to excessive sebum production and clogged pores, resulting in acne. This is especially common during puberty, but can also affect adults.

5. Thyroid Disorders: The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate metabolism, energy levels, and overall body function. An overactive or underactive thyroid can lead to symptoms like weight gain or loss, fatigue, and temperature sensitivity.

6. Obesity: Hormonal imbalances, especially involving hormones like insulin, leptin (which regulates hunger), and cortisol, can contribute to obesity. These imbalances can affect appetite, metabolism, and fat storage.

7. Hair Loss: Hormonal imbalances can lead to hair thinning or balding in both men and women. This can be due to issues like thyroid malfunctions or high levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone.

8. Mood Swings and Mental Health Issues: Imbalances in hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol can significantly impact mood and emotional well-being. Conditions like depression and anxiety have been linked to such hormonal fluctuations, often exacerbated during periods like menopause or andropause.

Benefits of Hormone Balancing

Since naturally occurring hormones are responsible for maintaining a wide array of normal bodily functions, patients can expect to enjoy multiple benefits from hormone balancing treatment, including:

- Increased libido

- Improved memory, clarity, and cognitive function

- Reduced negative effects of menopause

- Raised energy levels

- Improved ability to lose or normalize weight

- Increased capacity to build muscle

- Boosted mood and quality of life

- Enhanced, healthier skin

Hormone balancing has the potential to help a patient feel like a new person and to regain function that has been lost with age.

How to Naturally Balance Your Hormones

For many people, small and simple lifestyle changes can help restore proper levels of hormones in the body. A well-balanced diet and healthy habits may improve your hormonal health and allow you to feel your best. Here are some ways to naturally balance your hormones.

1. Get enough protein. Proteins provide amino acids that your body cannot make on its own and are needed to produce peptide hormones. These hormones play a crucial role in regulating several physiological processes, including growth, energy metabolism, appetite, stress, and more.

2. Exercise regularly. Getting enough physical activity strongly influences your hormonal health. It enhances hormone receptor sensitivity, helping the delivery of nutrients and hormone signals.

3. Maintain a moderate weight. Weight gain is directly associated with hormonal imbalances. Obesity relates to a lack of ovulation in women. Eating within your calorie range can help maintain hormonal balance.

4. Watch your gut health. Your gut produces numerous metabolites that can affect hormone health.

Lower sugar intake. Minimizing added sugar intake can help balance hormones. Eating added sugar promotes insulin resistance, and fructose intake is linked to disruptions in the gut microbiome, ultimately leading to hormonal imbalances.

5. Reduce stress. Stress can significantly harm the body’s hormones in many ways. Work to decrease and manage your daily stress.

6. Get enough sleep. Sleep is one of the most important factors in hormonal imbalance. The levels of hormones can rise and fall throughout the day due to the quality of sleep.

7. Eat healthy fats. Healthy fat intake can work to maintain balanced hormones that are involved with appetite, metabolism, and feeling full.

8. Eat plenty of fiber. Fiber plays a role in gut health, helping regulate hormones like insulin.

Top 15 Foods that Balance Hormones

Nutrients from food act as the building blocks for hormone production. Here are 15 foods to help balance hormones and ease menopause symptoms:

1. Avocados

Avocados are well known for their high content of healthy fats, specifically monounsaturated fats. These fats play a crucial role in hormone production, serving as the building blocks for hormone synthesis. They also contain dietary fiber, which can help regulate estrogen levels. Their high magnesium content also helps manage cortisol levels and reduce stress response in the body.

2. Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds are rich in lignans, a type of phytoestrogen that can mimic estrogen in the body. They have been studied for their potential to regulate estrogen levels, particularly in the context of menopause and menstrual cycle irregularities. Flaxseeds are also an excellent source of fiber, further supporting hormonal balance by promoting gut health and facilitating the elimination of excess hormones.

3. Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are another excellent source of healthy fats, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, which are necessary for hormone synthesis. They are also packed with fiber, which can help balance insulin levels and support gut health. Additionally, chia seeds contain essential minerals like magnesium and zinc, which are vital for hormone production and function.

4. Leafy Greens

Leafy greens like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are packed with nutrients that support hormone health. They are rich in antioxidants, which can reduce inflammation and aid in hormone production. Plus, their high iron content may help prevent anemia, while their significant magnesium levels support cortisol regulation, promoting a balanced stress response.

5. Broccoli

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli are rich in a compound called indole-3-carbinol, which supports the liver in metabolizing estrogen. Additionally, broccoli is a good source of dietary fiber, aiding in the regulation of insulin and other hormones.

6. Quinoa

Quinoa is nutrient-dense and offers a substantial protein boost. As a complete protein, it contains all nine essential amino acids necessary for the body's functions, including hormone production. The complex carbohydrates in quinoa promote slow digestion and absorption, contributing to stable blood sugar levels and a balanced insulin response. Quinoa is also rich in magnesium and fiber, both of which support hormone health.

7. Berries

Berries, including strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries, offer a myriad of health benefits. They are rich in antioxidants, which can help fight inflammation, a factor that contributes to hormonal imbalances.  Berries also have a relatively low glycemic index compared to other fruits, meaning they cause a slower and lower rise in blood sugar and insulin levels. Their high fiber content helps maintain stable hormone levels by supporting gut health and facilitating the removal of excess hormones.

8. Nuts

Nuts like almonds, walnuts, and Brazil nuts provide a variety of nutrients, including healthy fats, protein, and fiber, all of which can support hormone balance. Brazil nuts, in particular, are an exceptional source of selenium, a mineral essential for the production and metabolism of thyroid hormones. Almonds and walnuts are also rich in healthy polyunsaturated fats, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which serve as building blocks for hormone production.

9. Lentils

Like other legumes, lentils are high in fiber, supporting balanced insulin levels and contributing to a healthy gut microbiome. They are an excellent source of plant-based protein and have a low glycemic index, helping to maintain steady blood sugar levels. The magnesium and B vitamins in lentils also support hormone function and production.

10. Yogurt

Yogurt can support a healthy gut microbiome, especially when fortified with extra probiotics. Probiotics contribute to a balanced gut flora, which plays a significant role in the regulation of hormones like insulin, ghrelin, and leptin. Additionally, yogurt is an excellent source of calcium, which is critical for the proper functioning of the parathyroid hormone. It’s important to opt for unsweetened varieties, as added sugars can lead to imbalances in insulin and other hormones.

11. Salmon

Salmon is touted for its high omega-3 fatty acid content, which serves as an essential building block for hormones. These healthy fats also support cellular function and reduce inflammation, which can disrupt hormonal balance. Salmon also contains vitamin D, which functions more like a hormone than a vitamin in the body, playing a vital role in numerous bodily functions, including bone health, immune function, and mood regulation.

12. Eggs

Eggs are nutritional powerhouses, providing high-quality protein and essential nutrients like vitamins D and B, selenium, and choline. All of these nutrients are vital for hormone production and regulation. They are also a good source of healthy fats, including HDL cholesterol, a crucial component of hormones like cortisol, testosterone, and estrogen.

13. Seaweed

Seaweed, like kelp and nori, has the potential to influence estradiol levels in the blood and increase the excretion of hormone-related substances in the urine, improving the overall balance of estrogen types. This means seaweed might help regulate estrogen levels and positively impact gut bacteria, making it a great option for hormone health.

14. Pomegranate

Pomegranates have been studied for their potential to influence hormone balance, particularly estrogen levels. They contain a unique compound called punicic acid, a type of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which may have estrogen-balancing effects. The fruit is also rich in antioxidants and dietary fiber, both of which support overall hormone health. Antioxidants help reduce inflammation, while fiber promotes gut function.

15. Dark Chocolate

While it might seem too good to be true, dark chocolate, with at least 70% cocoa, can be a great addition to a hormone-friendly diet. It’s rich in magnesium, which plays a crucial role in the production and secretion of sex hormones like progesterone, and it can also aid in regulating cortisol.  Dark chocolate is also high in antioxidants, which can help reduce chronic inflammation, thereby supporting overall hormone health.

Hormone Balancing Vitamins And Minerals

When it comes to hormone health, the right nutrients can make a big difference. Vitamins and minerals play a crucial role in keeping your body’s hormone systems running smoothly, from stress and sleep regulation to sex hormone production and thyroid function. If you're dealing with symptoms of hormone imbalance, supporting your body with key nutrients like magnesium, vitamin D, and zinc could help bring things back into balance naturally. Here’s a closer look at how these essential nutrients support hormonal health and where to find them.

1. Magnesium
Magnesium is involved in over 300 body functions, including hormone regulation:

- Stress hormones: Help manage cortisol by calming the HPA axis.

Vitex can be used to promote fertility, improve PMS and menopausal symptoms, and help women get their period back if prolactin levels are high. Vitex lowers prolactin and raises dopamine levels, which promotes ovulation and raises progesterone levels.

5. Black Cohosh (capsule form)

Safe and effective for symptoms related to low estrogen, black cohosh can alleviate hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. This herb has been used as a natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy in adult women, and the current research does not support an association between black cohosh and an increased risk of breast cancer.

6. Dandelion (tea form)

This herb is a pancreas-protective and liver-supporting plant that helps prevent and alleviate estrogen dominance and aids in estrogen metabolism. I’ve been recommending DandyBlend for years and recommend it as an easy way to incorporate dandelion into your diet. It’s similar to instant coffee (but caffeine-free) - just mix with water and add your milk/creamer of choice.

7. Turmeric (fresh food form or capsule form)

Curcumin, a compound in turmeric, can help balance hormones and manage conditions like endometriosis and PCOS. It reduces inflammation and can correct hormone imbalances like LH levels or low estrogen, progesterone, and/or FSH in women with PCOS.

8. Ginger (fresh food, capsule form, or tea)

Studies suggest that the flavonoids and phytoestrogen compounds in ginger can help balance the estrogen to progesterone ratio and are also useful in managing PCOS. In my article on the best teas for hormone balance, I explain why starting your day with a cup of ginger tea can help support hormone balance, digestion, and more.

9. Parsley (fresh food form)

This herb has a significant estrogenic effect in the body, supporting regular menstrual cycles and fertility. Parsley can also support liver health and boost antioxidant levels.

10. Rosemary (fresh food form)

A versatile cooking herb, this is another powerhouse plant with many health benefits and medicinal properties. Rosemary can support fertility, has a strong antioxidant activity, and enhances the stability of oils when used in cooking or grilling.

11. Shatavari (capsule form)

Known as the “Queen of all herbs,” Shatavari is an important component of Ayurveda medicine. This herb has phytoestrogen properties and has been used to treat female reproductive system issues, regulate ovarian cycles, and act as an aphrodisiac.

12. Licorice (capsule form)

Used for centuries, Licorice root has estrogen-like properties that may relieve menopausal symptoms and improve infertility. Before taking this herb, it's recommended to test your cortisol levels due to its ability to enhance the action of cortisol.

13. Spearmint (tea)

Studies show spearmint, a tasty and refreshing herb, can improve cycle regularity. It has impressive positive effects on PCOS because of its ability to promote healthy follicle-stimulating hormone and lutein hormone levels, while also lowering testosterone levels. Spearmint tea is an easy way to incorporate this hormone-balancing herb.

14. Evening primrose (capsule form)

Another herbal phytoestrogen, evening primrose oil, can reduce menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and also counteract hormonal changes during menopause.  Evening primrose can be helpful before menopause, too - the linoleic acid in evening primrose oil boosts healthy prostaglandin levels and improves PMS symptoms.

15. Chamomile (tea form)

Chamomile tea is known for its calming, sleep-inducing properties, but it also effectively lowers testosterone in women with PCOS and can be used to reduce menstrual pain and bleeding.

How to Treat Hormonal Imbalance

Treatment for hormonal imbalances may vary depending on the cause. Every person may require different types of treatment for hormonal imbalances.

A. Treatments for Females

Treatment options for females with hormone imbalances include:

1. Hormonal birth control: For those who are not trying to get pregnant, medications containing forms of estrogen and progesterone can help regulate irregular menstrual cycles and symptoms. Birth control is available as a pill, ring, patch, shot, or intrauterine device (IUD).

2. Vaginal estrogen: People experiencing vaginal dryness associated with changes in estrogen levels can apply creams containing estrogen directly to vaginal tissues to reduce symptoms. They can also use estrogen tablets and rings to relieve vaginal dryness.

3. Hormone replacement medications: Medications are available to temporarily reduce severe symptoms associated with menopause, such as hot flashes or night sweats.

4. Eflornithine (Vaniqa): This prescription cream may slow excessive facial hair growth in women.

5. Anti-androgen medications: Medications that block the predominantly male sex hormone androgen can help limit severe acne and excessive hair growth or loss.

6. Clomiphene (Clomid) and letrozole (Femara): Clomid and Femara are medications that help stimulate ovulation in people with PCOS who are trying to become pregnant. Doctors may also give those with PCOS and infertility injections of gonadotropins to help increase the chances of pregnancy.

7. Assisted reproductive technology: In vitro fertilization (IVF) may be used to help those with PCOS complications get pregnant.

B. Treatments for Males

Treatment options for males with hormonal imbalances include testosterone medications. Gels and patches containing testosterone can help reduce symptoms of hypogonadism and other conditions that cause low testosterone levels, such as delayed or stunted puberty.

C. Other Treatments

Treatment options for hormonal imbalances include:

1. Metformin: Metformin is a medication for PCOS and diabetes. It can help lower both androgens and blood sugar levels.

2. Levothyroxine: Medications containing levothyroxine, such as Synthroid and Levothroid, can help improve symptoms of hypothyroidism.

How to Find a Hormone Balancing Doctor Near Me

Finding the right hormone-balancing doctor can make a significant difference in managing symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, mood swings, or sleep disturbances. Because hormone health affects so many aspects of your well-being, it’s important to choose a practitioner who understands your specific concerns and offers a personalized, holistic approach to care. Whether you’re dealing with thyroid issues, perimenopause, low testosterone, or adrenal fatigue, there are practical steps you can take to find a qualified provider who aligns with your needs.

To find a hormone specialist, consider the following steps:

1. Credentials and Experience

Ensure the doctor has board certification in endocrinology or their respective specialty. Experience in treating your specific condition is also crucial. For example, someone with thyroid issues should seek a specialist with extensive knowledge of thyroid health.

2. Referrals and Recommendations

Ask your primary care doctor for recommendations or seek advice from friends and family. Online reviews and ratings can provide additional insights into patient satisfaction and outcomes.

3. Approach to Treatment

Some specialists may lean toward conventional treatments, such as synthetic hormone replacement therapy, while others might offer bioidentical hormone therapy or natural remedies. Choose a provider whose treatment philosophy aligns with your preferences.

4. Communication and Comfort

Effective communication is key to successful treatment. Look for a doctor who listens to your concerns, explains medical jargon in simple terms, and encourages a collaborative approach to your care.

5. Accessibility and Convenience

Consider the HRT doctor’s location, office hours, and whether they offer telemedicine options. Hormonal treatments often require regular follow-ups, so convenience plays a significant role.
