Disability Parenting Coach
1 hour 30 minutes
Parenting is hard enough at the best of times. But what happens when you throw disability into the mix? Whether diagnosed at birth or later in life, parents are often given little time and fewer tools in terms of how to process a new diagnosis; how to respond to and support a child through a recent traumatic experience (like an accident, new disability or medical trauma) for their child. Parents are also often left in the dark in terms of how to develop skills to respond to challenging behaviours, or create resilience within the family structure to respond to on-going stressors. And when disability results in the death of a child, there are few resources available to help parents grieve that loss. Heather draws on almost two decades of experience as a parent of disabled children, and four decades of experience as a person with a disability, along with thousands of clinical hours supporting families and individuals with disabilities to assist parents in creating the structures, supports and tools needed for you and your child to not only survive disability but to come to thrive in the midst of disability.
