Ivins is a city in southwestern Washington County, Utah, United States. It is a part of the St. George Metropolitan Area as a suburb or "bedroom" community. The population was 8,978 at the 2020 census, up from 6,753 at the 2010 census. Although Ivins was listed as a town in the 2000 census, it became a city in 1998.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.3 square miles (27 km2), of which 10.2 sq mi (26 km2) is land and 0.1 sq mi (0.26 km2) (0.68%) is water.
Ivins is near Tuacahn (an outdoor arts and amphitheater) and Snow Canyon State Park, which draw many people to the area. There are many new planned developments (some with golf courses) near or in Ivins, joining the earlier Kayenta and Padre Canyon developments.
Kayenta Art Village, located in the Kayenta Desert Community, features art galleries, a theater, and the Desert Rose Labyrinth made from small stones. The Tuacahn Center for the Arts in Ivins is the largest professional outdoor theater in Utah, employing between 100 and 250 people. It features a 1,920-seat outdoor amphitheater and an indoor theater. Fire Lake Park at Ivins Reservoir opened in 2018 and features a beach and swim area. What is Ivins, UT named after?
It was decided that this town should have a name other than Santa Clara Bench. Several names were submitted by the new settlers, however, the name chosen was sent in by Edward H. Snow, President of the St. George Stake. He suggested the new settlement be named after President Anthony W. Ivins, who had endeared himself to the people in this part of the country through his missionary work with the Indians. A short time after this, President Ivins met with the people and when they asked him if he objected to the town being named Ivins, he said, "No, as long as they spell it Ivins, instead of Ivens." At that time he contributed one hundred dollars in cash toward a new chapel and promised to send them a bell. This he did, and the bell still hangs in the belfry of the old church.
