Little Ferry was formed by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on September 18, 1894, from portions of Lodi Township and New Barbadoes Township, based on the results of a referendum held two days earlier. The borough was formed during the "Boroughitis" phenomenon then sweeping through Bergen County, in which 26 boroughs were formed in the county in 1894 alone.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough had a total area of 1.67 square miles (4.32 km2), including 1.48 square miles (3.83 km2) of land and 0.19 square miles (0.50 km2) of water (11.44%).

Little Ferry was first a part of New Barbados. Little Ferry later was a part of Lodi Township when the Township was formed in 1825. Incorporated in 1894, the Borough was named after the rope-drawn Little Ferry that crossed the Hackensack River between 1659 and 1826.

The Borough of Little Ferry is subject to flooding due to the presence of both the Hackensack River and the Losen Slote Creek within the community limits. Approximately 68% of the Borough is located within the floodplain of these two water bodies. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) maps these areas known as areas of Special Flood Hazard (SFHA) in their Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM). The floods of greatest impact to the community were Hurricane Floyd in September of 1999 and Hurricane Irene in August of 2011, and Super Storm Sandy in 2012. The impact of each flood varies within each neighborhood but the entire Township is affected due to road closures and possible power outages.
