LaGrange, NY

 

LaGrange is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The town was named after the estate of the Marquis de Lafayette. 

The town was originally established in 1821 as "Freedom" from parts of the towns of Beekman and Fishkill, but confusion with another location caused the name to be changed to "LaGrange" in 1828. 

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 40.3 square miles (104.5 km²), of which 39.9 square miles (103.3 km²) is land and 0.46 square miles (1.2 km²), or 1.17%, is water. The town of LaGrange is located within the Hudson Valley region of New York. The towns bordering LaGrange are Union Vale to the east, Beekman to the southeast, East Fishkill and Wappinger to the south, Poughkeepsie to the west, and Pleasant Valley to the north, with a small part of Washington also bordering LaGrange.

As of the census of 2000, there were 14,928 people, 5,085 households, and 4,103 families residing in the town. The population density was 376.0 inhabitants per square mile (145.2/km²). There were 5,240 housing units at an average density of 132.0 per square mile (51.0/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 91.98% White, 2.41% African American, 0.12% Native American, 2.94% Asian, 1.14% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.26% of the population.

There were 5,085 households, out of which 40.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.2% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.3% were non-families. 15.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.28.
