Early settlement in southwest Greene County centered on the community of Little York. When the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad built a line through the area in the early 1870s, Little York was not on the route. Settlement moved two miles away to Brookline which was on the rail line's route.

This village eventually became known as Republic and was incorporated in 1871 While the railroad did go through Republic, there initially was no switch or depot located in the city. A public subscription of $1000 raised the funds to build a depot in the city. Subsequent growth is attributed to the depot's completion.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.31 square miles (34.47 km2), of which 13.30 square miles (34.45 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water. Most of the city lies in Greene County, and the other is in Christian County.

How did Republic, MO get its name?
Little is known how the Republic got its name. Some of the older residents say that Mark Ritter and his sister, Mrs. Worsefield (the first postmaster and his assistant), named it. Still, others say that “Uncle” Billy Cliborn gave it the name it now bears. The Battle of Wilson’s Creek (called Oak Hills by the Confederates) was fought 3 miles east of Republic on August 10, 1861, and marked the beginning of the Civil War in Missouri. Named for the stream that cross the area where the battle took Place, it was a bitter struggle between Union and Confederate forces for control of Missouri.
