San Tan Valley, AZ
San Tan Valley is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northern Pinal County, Arizona, United States. With 99,894 residents as of the 2020 census, it is the largest unincorporated municipality in Pinal County.
San Tan Valley derives its name from the nearby San Tan Mountains. The origin of the name San Tan is disputed, with suggestions ranging from a corruption of the name Santa Ana to the last name of George Santan, a prior postmaster in nearby Gila County. Previously referred to as San Tan Heights, San Tan Foothills, Greater San Tan, and simply the San Tan Area, the community lacked any official name and residents used nearby Queen Creek for their mailing addresses. To coincide with the addition of a new ZIP Code for the community on July 1, 2009, the United States Postal Service was petitioned to provide the area with a new name. As part of the initial request, the "Bella Vista" name was submitted to the postal service, drawing the ire of some residents who opposed the suggested name. In response, the Greater San Tan Area Coalition organized a non-binding vote on June 23, offering residents the opportunity to vote on a name for the community.
The area, which had consisted primarily of undeveloped desert and agriculture before 2000, experienced considerable growth in the early part of the decade. As early as 2004, attempts to incorporate the area were underway. An initial attempt, which proposed a name of simply "San Tan" for the area, was blocked by the neighboring town of Florence after rural residents there expressed concern that allowing incorporation would accelerate the urbanization of the area. A subsequent effort in 2005 failed to gain traction. Following the renaming of the area in 2009, a renewed effort at incorporation sought to put the issue to a vote in 2010, this time with the support of Pinal County. The Town Council of Florence unanimously rejected a resolution that would have approved San Tan Valley's proposed boundaries over concerns about their allotment of state-shared revenue.
The community is renowned for its commitment to health and wellness, with numerous facilities and programs dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle. FAQs
Is San Tan Valley, AZ part of Queen Creek?
Areas outside the incorporated Town limits are often referred to as Queen Creek since the "Queen Creek" name is used in property mailing addresses assigned by the post office. The unincorporated areas of Pinal County, known as San Tan Valley, have never been in the Town limits of Queen Creek. However, some areas are included within the Town’s planning area, which extends beyond the Town’s official boundaries. To stop providing services to an area within its incorporated area, the Town would have to “de-annex” the area. The Town of Queen Creek has never "deannexed" any property.
What is the history of San Tan Valley, AZ?
It was established in 2003 when the area bordering it to the east, Florence, merged with Queen Creek. The name San Tan Valley was chosen due to its location along the San Tan Mountains which offer stunning views of the landscape and are home to some of Arizona's native wildlife. The first settlers in the area were known as “Hohokam” who lived in villages and built irrigation canals from 700-1450 AD. They made their living by farming maize and other crops such as beans and squash throughout San Tan Valley and left behind archeological artifacts that can still be found today. After them came Spanish missionaries who explored the area during the 1500s, followed by ranchers during the 1800s who relied on cattle herding for income.
