FAQs:
What is Detox?
A detox is the process of removing toxins which is a generic term for something that makes you feel unwell from your body. Your body does this automatically, though. That’s the job of the liver and other organs. If you eat something you’re not supposed to, or take too much of a medication, the liver helps metabolize everything.
Why is Detoxing the Body so Important?
Our bodies are exposed to numerous toxins each and every day. These toxins include environmental toxins and chemical pollutants in the air we breathe, and toxins from our food and beverages. Although your body has an amazing ability to remove these harmful toxins, they continue to accumulate and can have many negative effects on your body. Your organs can become bogged down and toxicity can manifest in your body through a wide variety of symptoms. Detoxing the body with a healthy detox program, can help remove harmful toxins, pesticides, heavy metals and excess waste from your body.
How Often Should You Detox Your Body?
The best frequency for detoxing will vary from person to person, and this is due to many factors. For one, we’re all managing a different toxic load depending on our environment, diet, grooming habits, and other lifestyle factors. Since toxins can be found in everything from clothing to shampoo to fertilizers to car emissions, your day-to-day routine will impact your toxic load and, therefore, how often you’ll need to detox.
Some people detox once a week, others once a month, and others just a few times per year. If you’re frequently experiencing symptoms of toxicity, such as fatigue, moodiness, mental fog, and abdominal bloating, more frequent detoxing is a smart choice. But, if you have a relatively low toxic load and don’t struggle with symptoms of toxicity, you may only need to detox a few times per year.
How Long Does it Take to Detox Your Body?
The length of time in which your body needs to fully detox can take anywhere from a few days to a few months depending on a variety of factors. While a substance like alcohol might be completely gone from the body in a manner of days, the lasting effects of the alcohol might take a lot longer to get rid of. Some of the other factors that play a role in determining just how long it will take to detox include:
- The type of substance abused
- The number of substances abused
- The person’s age
- The person’s gender
- The person’s medical history
- Whether or not they also suffer from a mental health condition as well (co-occurring disorder)
- How much of the substance or substances are in the system
- How often substances were abused
- How severe the substance abuse or addiction is
Who Should Avoid Detoxes and Cleanses?
Detoxes and cleanses can be especially dangerous for the elderly, young children, and women who are pregnant or breast feeding. They are also dangerous for people who:
- Have a weakened immune system
- Are taking multiple medications
- Have an underlying health condition.
- Have diabetes (If you have diabetes, follow you doctor’s nutritional advice.)
- Have an eating disorder
How Does a Detox Cleanse Make You Feel?
While many detox diets promise a sense of well-being and feeling good, the method and products can produce various adverse side effects.
If the detox diet recommends limiting or eliminating calories and foods, you may experience the following:
- Hunger
- Irritability
- Headaches
- Weakness or fatigue
If the detox includes ingesting salt water, herbal teas, laxatives, or diuretics, you may experience the following:
- Dehydration
- Cramping or bloating
- Nausea or other gastrointestinal symptoms
What is Detox Water?
Detox water is water that has been infused with the flavors of fresh fruits, vegetables, or herbs. It’s sometimes referred to as fruit-infused water or fruit-flavored water. You can make detox water at home in lots of different ways. You can use any combination of fruits, vegetables, and herbs that you like. Because it’s made by infusing flavor, rather than juicing or blending, detox water contains very few calories. That makes it a popular drink for detox regimens like the “lemon detox” or “master cleanse.” Detox water is also often recommended in weight loss plans, especially in place of high sugar drinks like soda and fruit juice.
How Does Apple Cider Vinegar Detox Your Body?
The idea behind the detox is that raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar still has “the mother” in it. The mother contains good bacteria for the gut, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. It’s normal for apple cider vinegar with the mother to be murky or cloudy. Trying an apple cider vinegar detox is likely safe for most people.
How Long Does it Take for Your Body to Detox from Alcohol?
According to the American Addiction Centers, initial detox takes about a week. However, a person may find that their symptoms continue for longer. In most cases, a person can expect the following timeline:
- About 8 hours after the first drink, the initial stage of withdrawal symptoms begins.
- After about 24–72 hours, symptoms generally peak.
- After about 5–7 days, symptoms may decrease in intensity.
- After the first week, some side effects, particularly the psychological ones, may continue.
How Do I Know My Body is Detoxing?
Once the cleanse is over, people report feeling better than ever, being more focussed, energized and rejuvenated. Suddenly the food tastes better, digestion is more efficient and the bowel movements are regular. The skin is clearer, the eyes are whiter and the body is toned. This feeling of general well-being is a reward anyone can experience if they want to put some time and effort towards a detox program.
How the Body Eliminate Toxins
There are several ways that the body naturally flushes toxins from the body. Various organs and organ systems help the body eliminate toxins from chemicals you may be exposed to at work, at home, through personal care products, or your food.
Liver
Your liver is your body's primary filtration system by chemical conversions. It breaks down toxic substances, such as alcohol, drugs, or other chemicals, into safer (or even harmless) byproducts that are excreted into the blood or bile and released from your body in urine or stool.
Kidneys
Your kidneys filter your blood and remove wastes and toxins, including byproducts of metabolism, toxins made water soluble by the liver, and industrial toxins, such as heavy metals. They also help to excrete nutrients that have been consumed in excess, such as salt or water-soluble vitamins.
Digestive System
Your digestive system works to eliminate toxins in several ways. It can expel the toxic substance via vomit or diarrhea. The cells lining the inside of your digestive tract have enzymes that support detoxification, which convert harmful substances into less harmful substances that can be eliminated from the body.
Lungs
Your lungs are self-cleaning organs that filter and expel toxins that you breathe in, such as smoke, pollution, and viruses.
Skin
Your skin expels toxins through sweat, including heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury.
The Most Common Ways to Detox
There are many ways to do a detox diet — ranging from total starvation fasts to simpler food modifications.
Most detox diets involve at least one of the following:
1. Fasting for 1–3 days.
2. Drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juices, smoothies, water, and tea.
3. Drinking only specific liquids, such as salted water or lemon juice.
4. Eliminating foods high in heavy metals, contaminants, and allergens.
5. Taking supplements or herbs.
6. Avoiding all allergenic foods, then slowly reintroducing them.
7. Using laxatives, colon cleanses, or enemas.
8. Exercising regularly.
9. Completely eliminating alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, and refined sugar.
Signs You Need a Detox
Here are some signs a detox may do you some good.
1. Your Energy Is Zapped
If you always feel like you need to grab a latte to get any kind of pep in your step, a detox might be in order. Poor lifestyle and diet choices can stress us mentally as well as physically, slowly draining our energy and motivation. There’s a good chance you’ve been feeling fatigued for so long you may not even remember what it’s like to feel “normal” anymore. After an effective detox, many report feeling renewed, refreshed and full of positive energy.
2. Your Digestion And Gut-Health Aren’t Great
Digestive issues are probably one of the first things we notice when our body isn’t working as it should. Symptoms like bloating, gas, acid-reflux, heartburn, constipation and diarrhea can all indicate your digestive system isn’t working as it should. Poor food choices (processed foods, food preservatives, additives, dyes) as well as food sensitivities and intolerances like corn, soy, wheat, gluten, eggs, and dairy can often be the culprit. This can make it hard for our system to break down and absorb the nutrients we need for healthy metabolism and immunity.
3. You Don’t Drink Enough Water. Or Any.
If you’re not drinking enough water, you’re not giving your body what it needs to keep flushing toxins from your system. The liver and kidney both rely heavily on the water we drink to keep things moving.
4. You Have Skin Issues Like Rashes And Breakouts
An accumulation of toxins in the body can sometimes manifest as rashes and breakouts on the skin, which is our body’s largest organ and barrier to pathogens and toxins. If you’re noticing skin issues like breakouts, rashes, dry patches, bumps, flakiness, itchiness or discoloration that you can’t seem to get a handle on, it can be a sign your body is dealing with an internal imbalance or environmental stresses. Hidden or not-so hidden sources of toxins on the skin can include cleaning products, fragrances, and cosmetics.
5. You’re Virtually A Couch Potato
While technology helps us in countless ways, it’s also made us more sedentary. Lack of exercise and physical activity can have a negative effect on our circulation which has been linked with lowered immunity, less energy and a decreased ability for the body to sweat and rid itself of toxins including heavy metals and drugs.
6. You Often Get Migraines And Headaches
A lot of things can trigger migraines and headaches, including hormones, foods, preservatives, stress, dehydration, chemicals, environmental toxins and more. But if you find yourself constantly reaching for a pain-reliever, it may be time for a cleanse.
7. You’ve Been on Prescription Medications Or Have Undergone Surgery
Taking medications or getting anesthesia for surgery can be necessary, but they do come with side effects and risks. Toxicity can also occur when medications build-up in our systems over time or when the dose given is too high and the liver and kidneys are unable to remove it completely from the bloodstream. This can cause us a variety of issues including memory loss, restlessness, fainting spells, high blood pressure and more.
8. You Have Anxiety And Mood Swings
Poor diet and lifestyle choices as well as nutrient deficiencies, exposure to toxins, prescription drug use and imbalances in the body can all cause anxiety, mood swings and even depression. A detox can help you start to nourish your body once again while removing toxins that may over excite your system.
9. You Have Foggy Brain Or Trouble Concentrating
If you feel like you’re not thinking as clearly as you should, a detox could do you some good. Many studies have shown that exposure to pollution and toxins can have a serious effect on our brains and the way it functions. After a cleanse many happily report a feeling that the “fog has been lifted” and they have better mental clarity with improved memory performance.
10. You Live In A City
Those of us that live in cities are exposed to the highest amounts of pollution. Air pollution, aka smog, is a mixture of pollutants and harmful compounds that can contaminate indoor and outdoor surfaces and even settle on your skin. What’s worse is that we take these toxins into our body simply by breathing.
11. You’re Exposed To Chemicals At Work
Certain professions are more exposed to harmful chemical and toxin exposure than others. Nail techs as well as hair stylists can be especially prone to chemical exposure as are painters, mechanics, agriculture and industrial workers, truck drivers, maids and maintenance workers.
12. You’re A Cosmetics, Skincare And Fragrance Lover
Most makeup, cosmetics and skincare products come in hard to resist packaging in swoon worthy colors promising goddess (or god) inducing benefits that are impossible to resist. But the truth is that we really don’t know what’s in most of these products. At least 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed into our bodies. A study of 2,016 women by deodorant-maker Bionsen, found that the average woman’s daily “glow-up” routine can expose her up to 515 different synthetic chemicals each day. While the European Union has banned over 1,300 chemicals found in cosmetics, back here across the pond, the FDA has only banned a total of 8 and restricted 3. It also doesn’t require these products to list every ingredient or have them tested before they hit the market. Which means it may be time to do a detox of your body and your bathroom cabinet.
13. You’re Overweight Or Can’t Seem To Lose Weight
If you’ve tried every diet and exercise like crazy, but you can’t seem to lose weight, toxins may be the reason. A growing body of scientific evidence shows that hormone disrupting pollutants and chemicals we’re exposed to on a daily basis can interfere with our metabolism and cause our fat storing hormones to hold onto weight while putting us at risk of obesity and diabetes.
14. You Get Sick Often
If you find yourself frequently dealing with symptoms like sore throats, dry coughs, congestion, or respiratory infections a detox might be a good idea. While nourishing the body it can help clear away toxins and triggers which can help our immune cells function the way they should. If it’s successful you may even notice you don’t get sick nearly as often and your allergies clear up.
15. You’re Stiff And Achy All The Time
If you find yourself constantly suffering from soreness, stiffness, aches or pains, that can be a sign of toxin overload. Chemicals in our environment can cause inflammation in the body which can have an adverse effect on our mobility. Detoxing may help relieve or lessen your symptoms. And when you’re feeling more limber you’ll be more motivated to stay active, eat healthy, exercise, and live your best life.
16. Your Diet Isn’t Great And You’re Addicted To Sugar And Caffeine
If you have addictions to sugar, caffeine, or junk food a detox program can help you eliminate or at least tame unhealthy cravings that can leave us feeling sick and tired. Processed foods can also be filled with artificial flavors, dyes, preservatives, and other chemicals that can cause inflammation in the body.
Health Benefits of Detoxing the Body
A personal detox program can be simple, yet impressively effective. Given the amount of toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis, detoxing the body is not only beneficial, but necessary. Although a detox program is one of the best ways to rid your body of toxins that slow your body down and make it unhealthy, not all of these programs are created equally. It is crucial to choose a smart, safe, and well-organized detox program. Here are 9 incredible benefits that can come from detoxing the body with a healthy detox program.
1. Improved Energy
When your body is bombarded with toxins, you may find yourself feeling tired and easily fatigued. Chronic fatigue can make it next to impossible to perform even your most basic day-to-day responsibilities, let alone enjoy life. Instead of turning to caffeine and sugar to keep you going, there’s a much healthier and more effective solution — detoxification. After a proper detox program, you will feel an inner and outer rejuvenation. By detoxing your body, your body will function better, and could boost your energy throughout the day. It’s vital to stay well hydrated while on any detox program, and that can also be a source of increased energy if you typically don’t get enough water throughout the day.
2. Healthier Skin and Anti-Aging
Detoxing the body can help provide clearer, smoother, and healthier skin. When your body is subjected to a toxin overload, these toxins try to escape through your pores. This can cause acne, body odor, a poor complexion, and premature aging. When you detox, you are getting rid of these toxins and many people notice improvements within a few days.
3. Help with Weight Loss
Weight gain can result from a build-up of toxins and/or a poor diet. By cleansing and detoxing the body, these toxins can be eliminated and may result in weight loss. It’s easy to see how a detox program would cause you to lose weight in a short amount of time. But if you are really looking to lose weight and improve your health, it’s important to establish healthier eating habits after detoxing the body.
4. Stronger Immune System
Do you feel sick a bit too often? A system that is congested with toxins will result in a poor immune system. A poor immune system will make your body very vulnerable to colds, the flu, and other viruses. Detoxing the body helps free up your organs to function the way they should. This gives your immune system a boost since you’ll be able to absorb nutrients better, including Vitamin C. A healthy detox program goes a long way in keeping you healthy and firing on all cylinders.
5. Stress Relief
The lack of poor nutrition and too many toxins impair your mental capacity. Detoxing is known to assist in developing coping strategies for stress. Healthy adrenals help the body and mind cope and deal with everyday stress without getting overwhelmed. Toxins are known to have an awful effect on our emotions leading to irritability, anxiety, depression and a decreased tolerance for stress. Detoxing the body can help you think more clearly, balance emotions, and dramatically reduce stress levels.
6. Clearer Thinking and Mental Alertness
When toxins circulate through your body they inevitably reach the brain and your central nervous system. These toxins may leave you feeling lethargic and affect your ability to concentrate. A build-up of toxins can also lead to poor sleeping patterns, anxiety and depression. Detoxing the body has been proven to help with these symptoms, as well as improving your mental alertness.
7. Healthier Hair
By the time you can see your hair, it’s already considered dead, as all of its growth occurs within the hair follicle. This is why it’s important to keep your body functioning at its full potential. When your hair is able to grow uninhibited by internal toxins you’ll see and feel the difference in your hair. In many instances hair gets shinier, and feels softer to the touch. Many people have even reported that detoxing their body has helped their their hair grows more quickly, which is a great sign of healthier hair.
8. Better Breath
It’s been theorized that one contributor to bad breath is a backed up colon. During a detox, you are able to clear out the toxins in your colon and get your digestive system functioning well again. As a result, your breath may see a natural improvement over the coming weeks. Keep in mind, however, that your breath may actually worsen while the toxins are being released. This is natural, and will improve once you are finished with your detox.
9. Improved Sense of Well-Being
Detoxing can provide an improved sense of well-being, and it is a great way to introduce a change in your lifestyle for the better. When you detox, you feel good, and when you feel good, good things happen. Whatever your reason for starting a detox diet, whether it is losing weight or lowering stress, it is important to keep the positive changes long after the detox program is over. Sticking to an improved diet and getting daily exercise are great ways to make sure that you feel good each moment of your life.
Foods that can Help in Detoxification
Here are the different kinds of foods that can aid in detoxification:
Lemon
Lemons are a staple of many detox diets, and there is a good reason for this. Firstly, lemons are packed with antioxidant vitamin C, which is great for the skin and for fighting disease-forming free radicals. Furthermore, the citrus fruit has an alkaline effect on the body, meaning that it can help restore the body’s pH balance, benefitting the immune system. Try starting your day with hot water and a slice of lemon to help flush out toxins and cleanse your system.
Ginger
If too much fatty food or alcohol has caused problems for your digestive system, it may be worthwhile to add some ginger to your diet. Ginger is not only great for reducing feelings of nausea, but it can help improve digestion, beat bloating and reduce gas. In addition to this, ginger is high in antioxidants and is good for boosting the immune system. To give your digestion a helping hand, try sipping on ginger tea or adding some freshly grated ginger to a fruit or vegetable juice.
Garlic
Garlic has long been known for its heart benefits, however, pungent food is also good at detoxifying the body. Garlic is not only antiviral, antibacterial and antibiotic, but it contains a chemical called allicin which promotes the production of white blood cells and helps fight against toxins. Garlic is best eaten raw, so add some crushed garlic to a salad dressing to boost its flavour and your health at the same time.
Artichoke
If you have recently been overindulging in fatty foods and alcohol, adding some steamed globe artichoke leaves to your meals is a great way to help get your body back on track. Globe artichokes are packed with antioxidants and fibre and can also help the body digest fatty foods. On top of this, the globe artichoke is renowned for its ability to stimulate and improve the functions of the liver – the body’s main toxin-fighting tool.
Beetroot
For those needing a quick health-boosting shot of nutrients, you can’t do much better than beetroot. Packed with magnesium, iron, and vitamin C, the vegetable has recently been hailed as a superfood due to its many reported health benefits. Not only is beetroot great for skin, hair and cholesterol levels, but it can also help support liver detoxification, making it an ultimate detox food. To enjoy its benefits, try adding raw beetroot to salads or sipping on some beetroot juice.
Green tea
While it’s not technically a food, no detox plan would be complete without regular consumption of essential liquids. Fluids are essential for keeping our organs healthy and helping to flush toxins from the body, and drinking green tea is a great way of boosting your intake. Green tea is not only a good weight-loss drink, but it is extremely high in antioxidants. Research has also suggested that drinking green tea can protect the liver from diseases including fatty liver disease.
Cabbage
Many celebs have resorted to the cabbage soup diet to help them lose weight and get in shape quickly before a big event, however, cabbage is not only good for weight loss – it is also excellent detoxifying food. Like most cruciferous vegetables (including broccoli and sprouts), cabbage contains a chemical called sulforaphane, which helps the body fight against toxins. Cabbage also supplies the body with glutathione; an antioxidant that helps improve the detoxifying function of the liver.
Fresh fruit
Fresh fruits are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre= and are also low in calories, making them an important part of a detox diet. If you’re after brighter eyes and skin, shinier hair and improved digestion, try boosting your intake of fruit and eating from a wide variety of different kinds. The good news is fruit is easy to add to your diet, so try starting your day with a fresh fruit salad or smoothie and snacking on pieces of fruit throughout the day.
Brown rice
If you want to cleanse your system and boost your health, it is a good idea to cut down on processed foods. Instead, try supplementing your diet with healthier whole grains such as brown rice, which is rich in many key detoxifying nutrients including B vitamins, magnesium, manganese and phosphorous. Brown rice is also high in fibre, which is good for cleansing the colon and rich in selenium, which can help to protect the liver as well as improving the complexion.
The Best Drinks for Detoxing
Your liver plays a very vital role in keeping you healthy and alive. It’s essentially responsible for cleaning and filtering your blood from the digestive tract before flowing to the rest of the body. It also metabolizes drugs and detoxifies chemicals. More than that, your lover secretes bile that helps digest fat and carry waste away.
Those are just some of its many functions. That’s why it’s crucial to keep it in tip-top shape. Cleansing and detoxifying can help protect it from disease and keep it healthy.
While the liver generally takes care of itself, certain foods and drinks can help maintain and better its health. You might wonder, “What drinks are good for liver detox?” Well, below is a list of great drinks that will help in liver detoxing.
Lemon Water
Lemon water is a simple but effective drink to cleanse. It helps in purging the toxins out of your blood. You can either squeeze a fresh lemon in water or slice it and add it to your water container. This drink works better to warm, as colder drinks can shock your body and take heat from your digestive system to warm up.
Ginger and Lemon Drink
If you want to level your drink up, add some ginger. It stimulates digestion, circulation, and sweating, allowing a better cleanse. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Drinking this boosts metabolism, relieves bloating, and even prevents sickness.
Grapefruit Juice
A World Journal of Gastroenterology study says grapefruit is among the helpful foods. It contains two primary antioxidants– naringin and naringenin– that help reduce inflammation and protect the liver cells, saving the liver from injury. These compounds can also reduce the buildup of fat in your liver and increase enzymes that burn fat. These characteristics make grapefruit great for fighting non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Tumeric Tea
Tumeric tea is considered one of the best drinks for liver detox. Studies show that turmeric has properties that can decrease the key pro-inflammatory molecules that initiate, develop, or worsen diseases like liver disease.
Green Tea
Another study by the World Journal of Gastroenterology mentions how green tea may help in reducing overall fat content and fight against oxidative stress. In addition, it may help lessen the symptoms of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Chamomile Tea
Chamomile tea is generally regarded as a drink to calm down nerves and help wind you down before bed. However, it does have sesquiterpene lactone that allows the liver to prepare the detoxification pathways. Additionally, the herb also has anti-inflammatory properties. Those help your body deal with the intermediates of detoxification, which can cause the levels of inflammation in your body to go higher than usual.
Oat Tea
High in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, oats help with digestion and are great for cleansing your liver and intestines. That’s why many consider oatmeal drink the perfect detox drink. It helps flush out toxins from your body.
Jujube Fruit Juice
Native to South Asia, the Jujube fruit has elements that aid in nourishing your liver blood again needed for fat burning and detoxification. This herb also calms the mind and eases stress levels, allowing you to get quality sleep. In turn, that helps your liver function properly. An overloaded liver leads to improper digestion, which then affects the Spleen-Pancreas. But in Chinese medicine, the jujube herb helps strengthen the Spleen-Pancreas.
Peppermint Tea
Peppermint contains large quantities of essential oil content, namely menthol, and menthone. These help in the digestive process, especially if you have a hefty meal at night. Food stagnation may be a sign of overeating, which can cause disturbed sleep. Peppermint helps overcome that. As a tea, it aids the digestive process by helping your liver with its detoxification and digestive functions.
Schizandra Berry Tea
The schizandra is not talked about much but holds plenty of health benefits. When infused in hot water, these berries can protect your liver from several harmful intermediates made through detoxification pathways. Plus, it’s a nice fruity drink you may enjoy drinking. Studies found that schizandra elements, like lignan content, have hepatoprotective capabilities. This means it can prevent damage to the liver. Additionally, schizandra berries are said to have an adaptogenic function on the whole body. That helps all the body processes function optimally without decreasing or increasing pathways out of normal range.
Coffee
Coffee may be good for the liver, as it is said to protect against illnesses like fatty liver disease. In a 2014 study in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, coffee influences other enzymes, giving it protective effects. More than that, the journal mentions coffee seems to decrease fat buildup in the liver and increases protective antioxidants. Coffee also has compounds that help liver enzymes get rid of cancer-causing substances.
How to Detox Your Liver
A liver detox is a process through which a body goes to give its body a break from all the processed foods or alcohol consumption one normally consumes to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Here are some effective ways of detoxing your liver.
1. Maintain Healthy Weight
A person’s likelihood of getting nonalcoholic fatty liver disease rises with obesity. This is due to the extra fat that gathers around the liver, making normal fat digestion and toxin removal by the liver difficult, if not impossible.
2. Avoid Alcoholic Drinks
The liver can heal more easily if you reduce your alcohol intake. Excessive use of alcohol can cause cirrhosis or scarring of the liver. Additionally, alcohol leads to oxidative stress, which harms cells.
3. Avoid Saturated Fats And Sugars
Stay away from processed and junk food. Foods heavy in saturated fats, simple sugars, and starch can cause diabetes, insulin sensitivity, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Fatty deposits that stop the liver from eliminating toxins cause nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
4. Liver-Friendly Foods
Protein consumption from both plant and animal sources should be balanced. Cruciferous foods, including cabbage, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts, increase healthy enzyme activity in the liver. Pesticide exposure is also decreased by eating organic food.
How to Detox your Gut
While colon cleansing is much more on the medical side, you can simply do your cleansing by changing your health habits in what we call gut cleansing. Here are some of the steps in gut cleansing:
1. Drink plenty of water
As the concept of cleansing is to flush out some fluids or wastes, drinking plenty of water is essential. Water helps in digestion and bowel movement and ensures that you get all the nutrients from your consumed food. Not just that, water can also help in lessening bad bacteria causing intestinal issues.
2. Manage stress
Stress can cause you a lot of health problems and yes, including digestive system issues. In fact, reducing your stress can help in improving your gut microbiome. Here’s what normally happens when you are stressed: your body goes into either fight or flight mode. It also shuts down any system that you can’t use to fight or run, including your digestion; hence, it gives you digestive issues.
3. Avoid sugar, saturated fats and preservatives
As much as possible, prevent yourself from taking sugar, saturated fats and preservatives if you want to improve your gut health. On the other hand, when you are doing a gut cleansing, you must strictly avoid all these three substances. This is because sugar, saturated fats and preservatives put toxins in your gut.
4. Get better sleep
Having better sleep can enhance your overall health, including your gut health. In fact, there is a study proving that having enough sleep has an effect on your diverse gut microbiome. When you get better sleep, your gut can have diverse and abundant bacteria, making your digestive system efficient in functioning.
5. Eat gut-cleansing foods
Eating the right food is also a must in gut cleansing. Preferably, you must eat broccoli, cauliflower, dark leafy greens, ginger, oatmeal, some teas, in-season fruit and bone broth. Some fermented foods, such as kefir, sauerkraut, kombucha and yoghurt must be added to your meals as well. This is because they can aid in adding good bacteria to your gut. Fibre can also help as it can manage your bowel movements. Some fibre-rich foods are Brussels sprouts, kale and spinach, organic milk and raspberries.
6. Create a timeline and method
In order to successfully cleanse your gut, you have to create when and how you will do it. Your timeline should depend on your lifestyle and schedule, as it can be really tricky. Your bowel movement may change and can disrupt your normal days. So, creating a timeline and method is a must.
7. Add a supplement or herbs
Taking oral supplements or herbs can help in cleansing your colon or gut. You can also try to find brands in the market that work for you. This can help in your cleansing on a regular basis as you can just simply take them anytime, anywhere.
How to Detox Kidneys
So now that we've talked about the truth about kidney detox, let me give you seven ways to help your kidneys to filter better.
1. Drink Water
Most people need to drink around two to three liters of water per day. And so if you think about a typical 16-ounce water bottle, that's anywhere from four to six bottles a day. But you want to consult with your physician, because if you have advanced kidney disease or if you have lung disease, or congestive heart failure, you may be on a fluid restriction. But in general, staying properly hydrated is a way to help your kidneys to filter better.
2. Low Sodium Diet
You don't want to have a diet with excess sodium, because that will lead to high blood pressure, which is the number two cause of kidney failure. Be sure to watch my video on 15 foods to avoid if you have high blood pressure after you finish reading this article.
3. Maintain Normal Blood Pressure
Having a normal blood pressure and not having too much pressure in your glomerular, or your kidney cells, is another way to improve your kidney function.
4. Maintain a Healthy Body Weight
If you are a person who is overweight or a person who is living with obesity, please consult with your physician or your dietician. And you want to maintain a healthy weight, or get as close to that healthy weight as you can. Even if you end up struggling and you're trying to diet and do all these things, and you're not as thin or skinny as you want to be, don't worry about that. But be in that process of getting to a healthy weight, because if you are a person who's living with obesity, then that is a risk factor for kidney disease.
5. Prevent Diabetes
Prevent diabetes or if you have the diagnosis of diabetes, you certainly want to manage it. Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure. So make sure you talk to your physician and find out what your hemoglobin A1C is. You want to find out if you are a pre-diabetic, if you have diabetes, or if you're at risk. And if so, you want to manage it, you want to prevent it. Because if you are able to control diabetes or prevent it altogether, that is a key way to helping your kidneys filter better.
6. Exercise
Exercise, it's not any huge, great secret. According to the American Heart Association, most people should be exercising for 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise. So that's about five days of 30 minutes of exercise each day. This will help in a lot of ways. It can help you to have that normal blood pressure we talked about. It can help you to prevent that diabetes or to manage it. It can also help you to get to that healthy body weight. So exercise is another way to help your kidneys to filter better.
7. A Kidney Healthy Diet
You want to have a kidney healthy diet that is mostly plant-based. You don't want a lot of saturated fats, carbs, or processed foods. A kidney healthy diet will help you to have a healthy body weight. It will help you to prevent diabetes, and it will help you to have normal blood pressure.
