Mount Airy is a city within Surry County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The native Cheraw people were known to inhabit the area prior to the arrival of these European settlers. As the westward expansion progressed following the French and Indian War, Mount Airy started to develop, serving as a stagecoach stop on the road connecting Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Galax, Virginia.
