Kent County is located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the county had a population of 657,974, making it the fourth most populous county in Michigan, and the largest outside of the Detroit area. Its county seat is Grand Rapids. The county was set off in 1831, and organized in 1836. It is named for New York jurist and legal scholar James Kent, who represented the Michigan Territory in its dispute with Ohio over the Toledo Strip.
The township was first organized in 1834 under the name Kent Township. The village of Grand Rapids was within the township, and the state renamed the township as Grand Rapids Township in 1842. The village was incorporated as an autonomous city from portions of the township in 1850. Grand Rapids Township became a charter township in 1979.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 15.55 square miles (40.27 km2), of which 15.33 square miles (39.70 km2) is land and 0.22 square miles (0.57 km2) (1.41%) is water.
