The community was established in 1955 by Fred Sproul and the American Builders, who chose the safe-sounding name Security. Then, in 1968, Jules Watson started Widefield Homes, a residential development with a name to reflect the open-space concept. The two communities later grew into each other.

The S.A. Wilson Elementary School in Security-Widefield was built in 1959-61. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
