Saraland is a city in Mobile County, Alabama, United States, and a suburb of Mobile. Saraland, part of the Mobile metropolitan area, is the third largest city in Mobile County.
The land area that was to become the present-day Saraland was included in a Spanish land grant to Don Diego Alvarez. Hence, the descendants of Alvarez were the ones to give the community its first name: Alvarez Station. The present name of the city is reported to have been given by C.J. DeWitt, a retired minister editor who moved south in 1890 for health reasons. Originally part of a Spanish land grant, the area on which Saraland now stands first was settled by squatters as early as 1800. The town’s original name was Alvarez Station. Saraland remained a small community until the mid-twentieth century when Mobile’s expanding population began to spread into nearby communities. Saraland was incorporated in 1957 with 125 residents.
