FAQs:

What is a Supplement Store?

A supplement store is a store that sells and supplies dietary supplements, vitamins, protein powders, and healthy foods to customers.

What are Dietary Supplements?

The term "dietary supplement" refers to a wide range of products including vitamins and minerals, herbs and other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and more. You can find dietary supplements in many forms, such as pills, gummies, powders, liquids, teas, and bars.

How are Dietary Supplements Different from Medicines?

Dietary supplements don't have the same strict safety and effectiveness requirements that medicines do. In the United States, all the medicines you can buy, even without a prescription, must be proven safe and effective, but dietary supplements do not have to be.

All prescription and non-prescription medicines are regulated in the US by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, dietary supplements are treated more like special foods.

In general, the FDA considers new medicines to be unsafe until they are proven safe in clinical trials. New medicines must go through a lot of testing to prove that they are safe and effective before being approved for use by the FDA. And the FDA must approve any new medicine before it can be legally sold in the US.

On the other hand, a dietary supplement can be sold without having to prove it is safe and effective first, as long as the maker doesn't claim it can treat, diagnose, prevent, or cure a disease (in which case the FDA would consider it to be a drug).

Supplements cannot contain anything that poses a known risk of illness or injury when used as directed on the label, or with normal use if there are no directions on the label. The FDA can stop a company from selling a supplement if it is unsafe, but only after the FDA gets reports that the supplement has caused harm.

How to Tell If Supplements are Safe?

Choose brands labeled with the NSF International, US Pharmacopeia, Underwriters Laboratory, or Consumer Lab seal. These verify that the product contains the ingredients that the label says it does, and that the product doesn’t have any potentially harmful ingredients. Be wary of supplements made outside the U.S., as many aren’t regulated, and some may have toxic ingredients.

Is It Safe to Order Vitamins in an Online Supplement Store?

If purchasing from well-known establishments, it is generally considered safe to order vitamins online. It is wise to first do research when choosing a place to purchase vitamins from. As a consumer, it is important to know what must appear on a supplement label. According to the FDA, five statements are required to appear on a label: the statement of identity (name of the dietary supplement), the net quantity of contents statement (amount of the dietary supplement), the nutrition labeling, the ingredient list, and the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor.1 If any of the above is missing, return the vitamin supplement.

Is It Cheaper to Buy Vitamins in Online Supplement Stores?

The short answer is - not necessarily. Prices online and in-store are generally the same; however, some retailers may offer discount codes website-wide or on specific brands. Plus, given the option to subscribe, you can save a few bucks.

Is it Better to Buy Supplements Online or in a Physical Supplement Store?

Both online and in-store shopping have pros and cons, and ultimately, it comes down to which sounds like the better option for you. If you’re regularly in and out of stores anyway, it’s not a major inconvenience to check out the in-person shopping options, whereas if you do most of your browsing from home, online might be preferable. Whatever you pick, remember to be thorough about your research and check you’re getting supplements that will help you.

Most Popular Supplements in Stores

Need help determining which supplements are right for you? Here’s a list of popular supplements and why you might take them, too. Here are the top 12 most popular supplements in stores today:

1. Vitamin A: Essential for growth, development, and a healthy immune system. Supports healthy vision and skin. Experts say that you should not consume more than 8,000 IU daily from diet and supplements combined, especially if pregnant.

2. Antioxidants help protect the body against damage from free radicals due to such factors as air pollution, sunlight, smoking, exercise, poor diet, and stress. Experts say that a mixture of antioxidant-containing foods offers a greater benefit than each item alone due to the synergy and the additive effects of the ingredients.

3. Vitamin B is necessary for energy, brain function, and stress management. Experts say that supplementation is recommended due to its poor stability during cooking, incomplete bioavailability, and potential for malabsorption.

4. Vitamin C supports healthy immune and brain function. Vital for connective tissue (such as collagen) formation. Helps protect the skin from free radicals. Experts say that it can be difficult to obtain adequate levels through food sources alone because vitamin C is sensitive to light, air, and heat. Significant loss of vitamin C can also occur with storage and processing of fruits and vegetables.

5. Calcium provides critical support for healthy bones and healthy hearts. Experts say that although it is never too late to support and nourish your bones, early intervention through adequate calcium intake, regular exercise, and a diet rich in fresh, unprocessed foods will help prevent bone loss in later years.

6. Vitamin D plays a major role in bone development and appears to have a beneficial effect on many of the body’s systems. Experts say that most people cannot get the needed levels of vitamin D and vitamin E from recommended diets.

7. Vitamin E supports healthy cholesterol levels and your body’s fight against the damaging effect of free radicals. Experts say that Vitamin E and mixed carotenoids may enhance skin protection.

8. EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids) are vital for numerous functions in the body, including a healthy cardiovascular system, brain, mood, joints, and skin. Experts say that those who eat more polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as omega-3s, may be more likely to do better on short-term memory tests.

9. Fiber supports normal blood sugar levels, hunger, cholesterol levels, and a healthy intestine. Experts say that dietary fiber, especially soluble fiber found in inulin, oatmeal, and barley, can help keep blood sugar levels balanced.

10. Multivitamins contain beneficial nutrients that may be difficult to obtain from food sources alone. Act as nutritional “insurance.” Experts say that many Americans are falling short in a number of nutrients including vitamins E, A, and C, and magnesium. Other nutrients that may be potential problems include calcium, vitamin K, potassium, and dietary fiber.

11. Probiotics play an important role in digestion, supporting the immune system and intestinal health. Experts say that obesity affects the diversity of gut flora, and while the research is preliminary, researchers speculate that probiotic supplementation may help to balance metabolism.

12. Protein powders help provide the protein that our body needs. Protein has amino acids that are vital for lean muscle tissue growth and repair, as well as cellular metabolism. Experts say that our body may get sufficient levels of protein from foods we eat, but if you are looking for additional support protein powder, normally providing about 15g of protein with no saturated fat, is an option. Most are vegetarian and some varieties are dairy-free or vegan.

Advantages of Shopping at Small Independent Supplement Stores

In a world dominated by big-box retailers and online marketplaces, there's a hidden gem that often gets overlooked: small independent supplement stores. These charming, community-centered establishments offer more than just products; they provide a personalized shopping experience with a host of benefits that extend beyond the transaction. In this blog post, we'll explore the numerous advantages of choosing to shop at small independent supplement stores.

1. Expertise and Personalized Guidance

One of the standout features of small independent supplement stores is the expertise of their staff. Unlike larger stores where employees may have limited knowledge, staff members at independent stores are often passionate and knowledgeable about health and wellness. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your individual needs, preferences, and health goals, helping you make informed choices.

2. Curated Selections

Independent stores take pride in curating their product offerings. You'll find a thoughtfully selected range of products that meet high-quality standards. These stores often prioritize natural, organic, and locally sourced options, allowing you to choose from products that align with your values and preferences.

3. Supporting Local Businesses

When you shop at a small independent supplement store, you're directly supporting a local business and contributing to the growth of your community. Your purchases have a meaningful impact on the livelihoods of the store's owners and employees, helping to create a vibrant local economy.

4. Building Relationships

Independent stores foster a sense of community. Frequenting the same store allows you to build relationships with the staff and other customers who share your wellness journey. It's not uncommon for these stores to host events, workshops, and seminars that bring like-minded individuals together.

5. Tailored Recommendations

At independent stores, you're not just another customer. Store owners and employees take the time to get to know you and your specific health concerns. This personalized approach ensures that the recommendations you receive are relevant and effective for your unique needs.

6. Unique and Artisanal Products

Independent stores often carry unique and artisanal products that you might not find in larger retailers. These products are often crafted with care and attention to detail, adding a touch of authenticity to your shopping experience.

7. Ethical and Sustainable Choices

Many small independent supplement stores are dedicated to ethical and sustainable practices. They may prioritize eco-friendly packaging, support fair-trade practices, and source products from environmentally conscious suppliers.

8. Staying Informed

Independent stores are usually at the forefront of health and wellness trends. Their focus on quality and customer relationships means they stay informed about the latest research and developments in the field. This ensures that you receive accurate and up-to-date information when seeking advice.

Benefits of Shopping at an Online Supplement Store

In today's fast-paced world, maintaining optimal health and wellness has become a top priority for many individuals. With busy schedules and limited time for shopping, online supplement stores offer a convenient and accessible solution for sourcing essential vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements. This flexibility eliminates the need to visit physical stores during operating hours, accommodating busy lifestyles and varying schedules.

2. Doorstep Delivery:

Gone are the days of rushing to the store to replenish your health supplement supply. Online supplement stores offer doorstep delivery, bringing your chosen products directly to your doorstep. This hassle-free delivery service saves time and effort, ensuring that you never run out of essential supplements.

B. Extensive Product Range and Variety:

1. Comprehensive Selection:

Online supplement stores boast an extensive product range that caters to diverse health needs and preferences. From vitamins and minerals to herbal supplements, protein powders, and specialty formulas, customers have access to a comprehensive selection of products to support their individual wellness goals.

2. Specialty and Niche Products:

In addition to mainstream supplements, health supplements online stores often carry specialty and niche products that may be harder to find in traditional brick-and-mortar stores. This includes organic, vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO options, as well as health supplements tailored to specific dietary requirements or health conditions.

C. Transparency and Information:

1. Detailed Product Information:

Online supplement stores provide detailed product information, including ingredients, dosage recommendations, and usage instructions. This transparency allows customers to make informed decisions about their supplement purchases, ensuring they select products that align with their health supplements and dietary preferences.

2. Customer Reviews and Ratings:

Many online health supplement stores feature customer reviews and ratings for each product, providing valuable insights from real users. Reading reviews allows customers to gauge the effectiveness and quality of supplements based on the experiences of others, helping them make confident purchasing decisions.

D. Personalized Shopping Experience:

1. Customized Recommendations:

Some online supplement stores offer personalized recommendations based on individual health profiles and goals. By answering a series of questions about their lifestyle, diet, and health concerns, customers receive tailored product suggestions that address their specific needs, making the shopping experience more personalized and efficient.

2. Subscription Services:

To simplify supplement management and ensure consistent usage, online stores often offer subscription services. Customers can subscribe to receive their favorite health supplements regularly, with automatic deliveries scheduled according to their chosen frequency. This convenient option eliminates the need to reorder products manually and helps individuals stay on track with their wellness routines.

E. Savings and Discounts:

1. Competitive Pricing:

Online supplement stores often offer competitive pricing compared to traditional retailers. By operating with lower overhead costs and leveraging economies of scale, online retailers can pass on savings to customers in the form of discounted prices and special promotions.

2. Bulk Purchase Discounts:

Many health supplement online stores offer discounts for bulk purchases, allowing customers to save money when buying larger quantities of their favorite supplements. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who use certain supplements regularly or families looking to stock up on essential health products.

F. Expert Guidance and Support:

1. Access to Health Experts:

Some online supplement stores provide access to health experts, such as nutritionists, dietitians, or certified wellness coaches. Customers can seek personalized advice and guidance on health supplement selection, dosage, and usage, ensuring they make informed decisions that support their health and wellness goals.

2. Educational Resources:

Online supplement stores often offer educational resources, including articles, blog posts, and FAQs, to empower customers with knowledge about health and nutrition. These resources cover a wide range of topics, from the benefits of specific supplements to tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, serving as valuable sources of information and inspiration.

G. Trustworthy Quality and Safety:

1. Quality Assurance:

Reputable online supplement stores prioritize quality assurance and safety standards to ensure the efficacy and purity of their products. Many supplements undergo rigorous testing and certification processes, adhering to industry standards and regulations to guarantee their quality and potency.

2. Trusted Brands and Suppliers:

Online supplement stores partner with trusted brands and suppliers known for their commitment to quality and integrity. By sourcing products from reputable manufacturers, customers can trust that they are purchasing supplements made with high-quality ingredients and manufactured under strict quality control standards.

H. Community Engagement and Support:

1. Online Communities and Forums:

Online supplement stores foster community engagement through forums, social media groups, and online communities where customers can connect with like-minded individuals, share experiences, and seek advice. These platforms provide a supportive environment for individuals to discuss health and wellness topics, exchange tips, and offer encouragement.

2. Customer Support:

Online supplement stores prioritize customer satisfaction and provide responsive customer support to address any inquiries or concerns. Whether it's assistance with product selection, order tracking, or resolving issues, dedicated customer support teams are available to assist customers every step of the way.

Supplement Store Buyer Tips

It's often hard to balance sober scientific judgments against simple, forceful claims for health in a pill. If you are considering taking a supplement, here are a few cautions:

1. Beware of extravagant claims; if it sounds too good to be true, it is usually not true.

2. Beware of testimonials and endorsements, especially from celebrities. Even the most sincere, well-meaning success stories offered by friends and relatives without financial incentives can't establish a product's safety or efficacy.

3. Beware of the idea that if a little is good, more is better. Although vitamin A is essential for health, for example, doses that exceed the RDA (3,000 IU a day for men, 2,330 IU for women) increase the risk of fractures. As noted above, a high intake of folic acid may increase the risk of certain tumors.

4. Beware of meaningless terms. The list includes all-natural, antioxidant-rich, clinically proven, anti-aging, and other vague but seductive claims that a product will promote heart health, prostate health, sexual prowess, energy, weight loss, fat loss, muscle power, and the like.

5. Beware of interactions between supplements and medications. A survey of over 3,000 people ages 57 through 85 found that 49% used at least one supplement, 81% used at least one prescription medication, and 37% of men over 74 used five or more prescription drugs. Always tell your doctors and pharmacists about any supplements you take and ask specifically about potential interactions with your prescription and over-the-counter medications.

6. Beware of adulterated products. The FDA has withdrawn over 140 products that were laced with undisclosed pharmaceutical ingredients. Products touted for sexual performance, weight loss, and athletic performance are the most likely to be contaminated with medications.

7. Beware of products that contain less — or more — than they claim. Since you won't have the protection of FDA oversight, it's hard for you to know what you're getting. In general, products that are voluntarily submitted for approval by private organizations like the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) or NSF International are your best bet.

5 Strategies for Selecting Safe Supplements

Once you've decided a supplement is a good idea, here are a few ways to make sure you are getting the best one:

1. Buy supplements from a reputable source

Since supplements aren’t regulated, many companies do not go through the hassle of quality control to ensure the nutritional label matches the product and that the ingredients in the bottle are pure. Large national, trusted supplement brands are better at this than small, one-off companies because they can afford proper quality control measures.

2. Look for a third-party verification on the supplement bottle

Many supplements are certified by USP (the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention) or NSF International, third-party organizations that conduct testing on supplements to determine if what is on the label is actually in the bottle and that the product does not contain high levels of contaminants, such as heavy metals. How do you tell if a supplement is third-party tested?  You just look out for these credentials on a supplement label. It is expensive, however, and not all companies can afford the analysis.

3. Look for third-party verification online

If you're struggling to find out if a supplement is third-party tested, try some third-party websites. They provide an analysis of supplements. These websites also publish lists of the highest-quality supplements.

4. Buy organic herbal supplements

Many herbal supplements will not have third-party verification. To ensure their level of contamination is lowest, buy organic herbal supplements to ensure that harmful pesticides are not included in the supplement.  Many credible companies provide information on where their herbs are sourced and are proud to share. Purchasing from large, well-known brands also increases the likelihood that the supplement contains the appropriate amount of the active ingredient, such as iron, vitamin C, or magnesium.

5. Choose single-ingredient supplements

Supplements that contain a single ingredient are more likely to contain the amount of the ingredient advertised on the label and less likely to have high levels of contamination. Many companies selling “proprietary blends” or multivitamins do not have to report any ingredient amounts on their labels and, thus, should be avoided.

What You Need to Know When Buying in an Online Supplement Store

Supplements are a type of food that you add to your diet to boost its nutritional value. They’re not included in the nutrition facts on food labels, but they can be just as important as the other things you eat. Some supplements are vitamins and minerals, which help your body get nutrients. Others are herbs or plants used for thousands of years to support health.

Here are some tips for buying supplements online:

1. Consider a reputable brand

If you’re buying supplements to help you stay healthy, you must ensure you buy from a trustworthy brand. That’s because there are so many different supplements that it can be tough to know what’s good for you and what’s just a waste of money. But if you have a brand that’s been around for decades and has a good reputation among its customers, you will know that at least one product was worth the price tag.

2. Compare different brand websites

When looking for a supplement, comparing a few different sites before purchasing is important. Here are a few questions you must ask yourself when comparing different retail sites:

  1. a) What is the price?

  2. b) Is the company environmentally friendly?

c)  What kind of guarantee does it offer?

d)  How much information is available about their products?

3. Check the brand’s credentials

Now, check the brand’s credentials. If they don’t have any scientific research backing up their claims, it’s probably best to look elsewhere.

4. Carefully read about the product

Before you buy a supplement, always read the product description. If it’s unavailable on the product page, look for the manufacturer’s website and read their content about the ingredient. The supplement industry is unregulated, and many companies will make false claims about their products. However, you can use this information to help you determine if a supplement is right for you.

5. Choose your supplements

When you are done with research and everything, fill your cart with your favorite supplements, confirm, and purchase your order.

6. Inspect order after delivery

You’ve just received your supplements and are about to start taking them. What’s next? One important thing you can do is examine them to ensure they are not expired, damaged, or otherwise compromised. If there is anything wrong with them, send them back immediately!

7. Consult the Healthcare Professional

Before investing heavily in supplements, you must talk with your doctor. Supplements are indeed a great way to get the nutrients and vitamins you need without eating as much food. However, they can also have adverse side effects, so it’s essential to understand which ones are right for you before purchasing.

8. Know the benefits of supplements

The benefits of supplements are many, but it’s essential to research before buying them. Here are a few things to consider:

  1. a) Does the supplement contain ingredients that work for you?

  2. b) Is it safe for your body?

  3. c) Is it worth the cost?

  4. d) Will this supplement help me achieve my goals?

9. Keep your expectations in check

Not every supplement will work for everyone. Some people may find that a particular supplement works wonders for them, while others can’t get the same results. It is vital to ensure you’re managing your expectations before taking supplements. It’s also essential to ensure you’re using the correct type of supplement for your needs.

10. Be aware of the side effects

Supplements are something that we all take, but are they safe? Supplements are a great way to get extra vitamins and minerals into your diet, but they can also be harmful if you don’t know what you’re getting into. There are certain things to consider before taking any supplements, including the side effects and whether your body needs them in the first place or not.

11. Follow Usage Instructions

Supplements can be great, but they are not for everyone. Before you buy a supplement, ensure you are taking the correct dose and are not allergic to any ingredients.

What to Look For in an Online Supplement Store Near Me

With so many vitamin and supplement suppliers online, finding the best site can be challenging. Whether you have a particular product in mind or are just browsing for top-rated options, it's essential to choose a retailer with high-quality supplements, dependable shipping, and fair prices. Here are some tips on what to look for in an online supplement store:

1. Transparency: When it comes to shopping for supplements, prioritize transparency—not just with individual products but with whole supplement stores. Make sure the store is clear about product storage, handling practices, and supplement sourcing. We also recommend choosing stores that sell supplements that have been third-party tested, meaning the quality of the supplement has been tested by an independent organization not involved in its formulation or production.

2. Vitamin Brands: Choose a reliable website that offers the brand of vitamins that you prefer. If you're not sure which vitamin brand to purchase, many sites carry a variety of brands based on which vitamin you're looking to buy. For example, you can search for a non-GMO, organic vitamin C supplement, then select a brand at a price that works for your budget. As with all vitamins, always speak with your healthcare practitioner before adding a supplement to your routine.

3. Price: Vitamin prices vary from site to site. When shopping for an online vitamin retailer, select a site that offers the best price. If you're looking for a one-time purchase, almost any website will work; however, if you're looking to reorder a vitamin every month, a subscription model may be more affordable.

4. Product Turnover: Look for a site with a high turnover of products so that you can rest assured that you're getting the freshest, highest-quality vitamins available.

5. Shipping & Pick-Up: Many sites offer free shipping or in-store pick-up. Consider how soon you need the vitamin and shipping costs when deciding which website to use. A pick-up option may be the quickest, most affordable method for some consumers; however, some may prefer the convenience of delivery directly to your doorstep.

6. Return Policy: Be sure to check out the website's return policy in case you receive a broken vitamin bottle or decide you no longer need the product. Some sites offer full refunds in the mail or in-store, whereas others have limited supplement return options.
