Penn, PA

Penn is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 475 at the time of the 2010 census. The borough was named for Pennsylvania founder William Penn. Penn is located at 40°19′44″N 79°38′25″W (40.329018, -79.640141). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2), all of it land.

In 1749, Benjamin Franklin—printer, inventor, and future founding father of the United States—published his famous essay, “Proposals Relating to the Education of Youth,” circulated it among Philadelphia’s leading citizens, and organized 24 trustees to form an institution of higher education based on his proposals. The group purchased the building and in 1751, opened its doors to children of the gentry and working class alike as the Academy and Charitable School in the Province of Pennsylvania. Franklin served as president of the institution until 1755 and continued to serve as a trustee until he died in 1790.

About 1854 George Seanor and J. H. Robinson purchased the land on which Penn Station is now located and opened the North Side Pit, which they operated as a cart mine, shipping the coal to Pittsburgh, where they had a retail yard. In 1859 the South Side mine was opened by William Coleman, J. H. Robinson, and others. John F. Wolf opened a general store in 1859. J. H. Oliver bought the meadow land lying between the railroad and Brush Creek and laid it out into lots, offering fifty dollars premium to those putting up houses. In the first season, J. C. Rankin built a hotel known as the Eisaman House. Few small boroughs have more industries within their midst than Penn. The large pipe works of the American Foundry and Pipe Company give employment to a large force of men.
