Claymont, DE
Claymont is a census-designated place (CDP) in New Castle County, Delaware.
The community now known as Claymont started on the banks of Naamans Creek where it empties into the Delaware River. This once-rich ecosystem has been occupied steadily since before 1200 A.D. and has undergone numerous cultural and economic changes, most of which are still evident in the architecture and living patterns of the community today. The first residents were aboriginal Indians of the Middle Woodland period (1100-1600 B.C.). Evidence of these early dwellers has been found along both sides of Naamans Creek. The Dutch named the creek and settlement after the Chief of the Lenape Indians who occupied the region. The settlement grew rapidly from the 17th century through the 20th century, first with gristmills, farms, and related ancillary industries, and later with lumber mills, a steel mill, and a chemical plant.
Sitting strategically along the Delaware River, Claymont has been a two-way thoroughfare for travel to and from Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., since colonial days. During the colonial period, the town served as a stop along the King's Highway, and with its location at the confluence of Interstate 95, Interstate 495, US 13 (Governor Printz Boulevard), and US 13 Bus. Philadelphia Pike has long been a thoroughfare for travel between Philadelphia (20 miles to the north) and Washington, D.C. (100 miles to the south).

FAQs
Is Claymont, DE a town?
Claymont is a town in northern Delaware. A largely blue-collar suburb of Wilmington, its borders are not clearly defined; it is generally accepted to have about 10,000 residents (2020). Claymont is in the far eastern part of northern Delaware, a few miles and minutes from the Pennsylvania border. It largely lies between I-95 and the Delaware River, and is bisected length-wise by U.S. Route 13, more commonly known as the Philadelphia Pike.
How did Claymont, DE get its name?
Claymont was so-named in 1856 upon the efforts of the wife of Reverend Clemson, pastor of the Episcopal church, after they had relocated from their family plantation, Claymont Court, in Charles Town, West Virginia. Claymont has been a continuous settlement near the mouth of the Naaman's Creek on the Delaware River since at least A.D. 1200, with evidence of its original inhabitants along both banks pointing to the Middle Woodland period (1100-1600 B.C.). The first western inhabitants named the creek and settlement after the Lenape chief who occupied the region. The area developed from a primarily agricultural community in the mid-19th century into a suburban resort area for wealthy Philadelphia families, and in the early 20th century into an industrial working community.
Why Claymont, DE is called a steel town?
The Worth family entered the iron and steel business in the mid-1800s, first in Elkton, Maryland, and then in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. The operations in Coatesville produced high-grade steel plates for boilers, tanks, and ships, along with boiler tubes. Those facilities were sold to the Midvale Steel & Ordnance Company in 1915, and the Worth brothers eventually started a company to build a steel plant in Claymont, Delaware, on a site along the Delaware River directly on the Pennsylvania Railroad line from Philadelphia to Wilmington. They continued to make steel plates and pipes. The company was sold to the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company in 1951 and a variety of owners followed through the ensuing years.
