FAQs

Why is Talladega, AL named Talladega?

The site was originally inhabited by Creek Indians, and its name was derived from Creek words meaning “border town.” On November 9, 1813, Andrew Jackson defeated a large force of Creek there, and the Creek were forced out in the 1830s. During World War II the city was a center of munitions production and air training. The economy is based on agriculture (including poultry and livestock), timber, and manufacturing (including textiles, yarns, cabinets, and wood products); tourism is also important.

What is the early history of Talladega, AL?

Gen. Andrew Jackson’s victories over the Red Stick Creeks at the Battle of Talladega and the subsequent Battle of Horseshoe Bend opened eastern and central Alabama to white settlement. The area officially remained Creek territory until the signing of the Treaty of Cusseta in 1832. In January 1834, lands were advertised for sale at a new government land office opened at Mardisville, just south of present-day Talladega. The Treaty of Cusseta specifically granted a half section of land to an African American man, Joseph Bruner, in recognition of his services as an interpreter. Bruner soon sold this tract to a local man, Jesse Duran. In July 1834, Duran donated the tract for a town site, with the proviso that he and his partner would receive a portion of the monies from the public sales. Six months later on January 9, 1835, the Alabama Legislature incorporated the town of Talladega.

The Cup Series races are the GEICO 500 and the YellaWood 500, which are both 188 laps each or 500.08 miles (804.80 km). The Xfinity Series race has historically been a 311.2-mile/500-kilometer (117 laps) since its 1992 inception, but was cut to 300 miles (480 km) (113 laps) in 1998 due to a spectator's letter questioning the metric distance, but restored to 500 kilometers by its current sponsor. The Truck Series race is 250 miles (94 laps). Once a 500-kilometer affair, the ARCA race was shortened to 300 miles in 1998 and 250 miles in 2006 when it was moved to Friday.
