Russellville is a city in Franklin County in the U.S. state of Alabama. The city is the county seat of Franklin County.

After the War of 1812, the U.S. government appropriated money to improve a route from Nashville to New Orleans. It was named Jackson's Military Road after Andrew Jackson, and it passed through what became Russellville. (Present-day Jackson Avenue and Jackson Highway, U.S. Route 43, follow portions of the original road.)

Russellville served as the first county seat from 1818-1849 before it was removed to Frankfort (which served from 1849-1879). After the fire at the courthouse in the third county seat of Belgreen in 1890, the seat was returned to Russellville in 1891.

Russellville is the county seat of Franklin County and is located in the northwest corner of the state. In the Reconstruction era, Russellville was a center of the iron and steel industry. The city of Russellville has four municipal parks—Hal Kirby Junior Park, Eastside Park, Southside Ball Field, and City Lake Park—which offer residents numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation and athletics. Every August, the town of Russellville hosts the annual Franklin County Watermelon Festival, which features a pageant, a 5K race, arts and crafts, and tennis tournaments. The first county seat was in Russellville, which was incorporated on 27 Nov 1819, three weeks before Alabama became a state. This area was first called Russell's Valley. When the town was laid out, a public square was created in the center of town. If you come to Russellville, the old square is the fourth block on the west side of Jackson Avenue. This is the block that borders Lawrence, Franklin, Washington, and Jackson Streets. The Courthouse Square was 384 feet by 468 feet. The first Courthouse and jail were built of logs. The county seat stayed in Russellville from 1818 until 1849, when an election was held to move the courthouse to a more central location.
