Mountain Brook is a city in southeastern Jefferson County, Alabama, United States, and a suburb of Birmingham.
The city was originally developed in 1929 by real-estate businessman Robert Jemison, Jr., as a whites-only suburb of Birmingham along the ridges known as Red Mountain and Shades Mountain. This has protected the area from urban encroachment.

Born out of the affluence of the 1920s, Mountain Brook became an exclusive hideaway for Birmingham's banking and business elite. Locally, Mountain Brook came to be known as an "Over the Mountain" community because it was nestled on the south side of Red Mountain, a geographic feature that originally isolated the enclave from the grime and violence of Birmingham's coal industry.
