Leeds, AL
Leeds is a tri-county municipality located in Jefferson, St. Clair, and Shelby Counties in the State of Alabama; it is an eastern suburb of Birmingham. Leeds was founded in 1877, during the final years of the post-Civil War Reconstruction Era. It housed the workers and their families of Lehigh, a Portland cement manufacturing plant.
Named, "The City of Valor" due to three Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, from World War II and the Korean War, who called Leeds home: Alford McLaughlin, William Lawley, and Henry "Red" Erwin. A wall in the Leeds Historical Society's Jonathan Bass House Museum is dedicated to the city's three Medal of Honor winners. In spring 2023, Chip Wise, the Leeds High School Band Director, composed an original piece titled, “City of Valor” meant to honor the three Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. In October 2023, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial invited Wise and his marching band to perform the piece at Pearl Harbor on March 26, 2024.
The War of 1812, geography, geology, and three cultures shaped the history of Leeds. Lying at the crossroads of ancient Native American paths in the center of Alabama, Leeds drew European settlers and their African-American slaves to a land of fertile growing seasons and rich sources of coal and mineral ore. The early settlers built churches and schools with many remaining in Cedar Grove, Oak Ridge, Ohanafeefee, and Mt. Pleasant. The principal survey of Leeds was entered into Jefferson County Map Book 10, page 21, in 1908. The settlement, dating to 1818 and incorporating on April 27, 1887 as "Leeds", has existed along the banks of the Little Cahaba River; beside a historic stagecoach route; and along two large railroads for the greater part of American history.
The major industries in Leeds are diverse, contributing to the city's economic growth and stability. The area is home to manufacturing facilities, with a focus on industries such as automotive production, metalworking, and logistics. The proximity to Birmingham also plays a role in the city's economic activity, with residents benefiting from a range of job opportunities in healthcare, education, and technology. Leeds places a strong emphasis on health and wellness, ensuring that residents have access to comprehensive healthcare services. FAQs
What is Leeds, AL famous for?

Designed differently than the "average" race track, the Barber Motorsports road course features spectator views from multiple grassy banks and naturally wooded areas. The track features challenging elevation changes, making it one of the drivers' and fans' favorite stops along the Indycar circuit and a true thriller for those kneecap-threatening motorcycles!
What is the history of Leeds, AL?
Leeds arose along an Indian trail in an area that was settled largely by veterans of the War of 1812 and the Creek War of 1813-14. The trail would evolve into a substantial stagecoach route and prompt the growth of a community named Cedar Grove, with a post office being established in the late 1820s or early 1830s. That town was renamed Oak Ridge in 1869. The area gained the notice of industrialists when iron ore and minerals, including limestone, chalk, and clay, were discovered and in turn brought railroads connecting the area with Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia.
How old is Leeds, AL?
Named for Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, Leeds was incorporated on April 27th, 1887. Its success as a young city came through three major factors: the incorporation of nearby Birmingham and the beginning of iron ore production there; the building of the Georgia Pacific Railway, from Birmingham to Atlanta; and the construction of a Standard Portland Cement manufacturing plant in 1906. The city recently broke away from the Jefferson County school system and initiated its own Leeds City school system.
